BERKELEY, Calif. - Ugo Eke and Chidinma Onyewuenyi each broke their own school records in the 400-meter dash and shot put, respectively, while Melanise Chapman broke a school-record tie in the 100 as the Aggie men's and women's track and field teams competed on Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal.

Freshmen Nathan Strum and Kevin Griffith helped spark the UC Davis men with strong showings in the 800 while Thomas Phillips finished second in the 400 hurdles. Additionally, Brock Bennett posted a top-10 mark in the javelin.

The meet was the second of two days of competition at the Brutus Hamilton which featured its open portion on Friday and its invitational sections on Saturday.

Eke won the 400 on Saturday in 54.11 seconds, lowering the school record she held entering the year and then dropped again to 54.34 two weeks at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major. She edged Alima Kamara of Cal who was second in 54.16.

Onyewuenyi bettered her own mark in the shot put, placing second at Cal at 52 feet, 1.25 inches. She went past the previous mark of 50-4.5 she had during the Causeway Dual against Sacramento State on Apr. 2. Onyewuenyi, who also holds the school's hammer throw record, is the only Aggie to ever have a shot put mark of at least 50 feet.

Chapman shared the school record in the 100 with Nicole Theus (2008) at 11.86 seconds but grabbed it for herself on Saturday by finishing third in the final at 11.71 seconds. Chapman, who tied the previous record in the prelims, had previously gone faster than 11.86 in her career but the marks were ineligible for record purposes.

The UC Davis women also had top-10 marks from Kayla Carter, Alycia Cridebring and Kristina Taylor. Carter finished fifth in the 100 hurdles final in 14.09, improving her No. 2 all-time placing by .03.

Cridebring and Taylor made their marks in the 1,500. Cridebring moved up one spot to No. 6 by crossing in 4:27.71 while Taylor solidified her No. 8 position with her time of 4:29.02.

The men had a limited contingent in running events on Saturday but had impressive performances from Strum, Griffith and Phillips. The Aggies' freshmen middle distance runners were third (1:50.42) and fifth (1:50.92), respectively, in the 800 on Saturday.

Strum's time was an improvement of the 1:50.74 he had at Sacramento State on Apr. 9, strengthening his No. 2 position on the Aggies' all-time chart, while Griffith jumped one spot to No. 4.

Phillips, ranked second all-time at UC Davis in the 400 hurdles, was second at the Brutus Hamilton in 50.94 seconds, the third time this year he's gone under 51 seconds.

Bennett added a top-10 mark in the javelin, going past 200 feet for the first time in his career. His mark of 200-2 on Saturday was more than three feet farther than his previous best of 197-1, entrenching his No. 6 all-time position.

Altogether, the Aggie men had eight top-four finishes on Saturday. Eddie Orgon added a third-place in the shot put and Ray Green was third in both the long jump and triple jump. Jonathan Sees faced an elite field in the rarely run mile, coming close to breaking the signature four-minute mark by placing fourth in 4:02.66.

Justin Kirkland added a fourth-place finish in the discus.

Ofunne Okwudiafor was second in the triple jump while Lauren Wallace picked up a fourth in the 800 for other highlights for the women.

The Aggies will send competitors to the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine on Friday and Saturday. UC Davis will also be at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford on Sunday.
