BERKELEY, Calif. - Breanna Standifer and Veronica Smart won the discus and shot put, respectively, Brian Thomas won the 400-meter dash and Marc Toney finished first in the pole vault, as the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams opened their weekend competition with the Brutus Hamilton Open on Friday at Cal.

The meet was the first of two at Edwards Stadium this weekend for the Aggies who will participate in the Brutus Hamilton Challenge invitational meet on Saturday.

Standifer posted a PR in the discus for the second time in three weeks, winning the event on Friday with a mark of 161 feet, 5 inches. It beat her previous best of 160-9 she set at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State two weeks ago.

Standifer saved the best for last in Friday's meet, unleashing her winning throw on the final of her six attempts. She had two other marks, including a throw of 155-5 on her fifth try, that would've won the competition as well. Standifer won by more than 14 feet while strengthening her No. 4 spot in the Aggies' all-time chart.

Smart, another standout thrower for the Aggies who is third all-time at UC Davis in the shot put (48-6), went over 47 feet for the third time this year with her winning mark of 47-3.50. Her first-place effort came on her third attempt and helped her take first place by almost three feet.

UC Davis had a strong performance in the men's 400, taking the top two spots with Thomas, a freshman from San Diego, and Matt Moreno, a sophomore from Atwater. Thomas had a PR by almost a full second, crossing the finish line in 48.08 to not only win the race but make his way on to the Aggies' all-time chart at No. 8. Moreno was close behind, finishing in 48.13 and debuting at No. 9 all-time.

Thomas' time is the fastest for UC Davis this season and the program's fastest since Thomas Phillips set the school record of 47.05 at the 2009 Big West Championships. Toney won the pole vault by clearing 15-1 on his second try before missing at 15-7 but giving the Aggies another first-place showing.

The Aggies had several other highlights on Friday. Senior Marcus Johnson was third in the 100 in a wind-aided time of 10.83 seconds, Miguel Aceves was fifth in the steeplechase in a season-best time of 9:24.70, Brandon Greenberg went 55-6.25 to take second in the shot put and Matthew Bender was fourth in the discus at 167-1. Ben Parodi took fifth in the hammer at 191-3, a two-foot PR that keeps him solidly in seventh place all-time.

Rianna Goins gave the UC Davis women a highlight with her fifth-place finish in the steeplechase. She was timed in 10:54.09, beating her previous best of 11:02.04 at last year's Big West Championships and solidifying her No. 9 all-time spot at UC Davis. Tori Edwards was second in the 400 hurdles.

UC Davis assistant coach K.P. Singh not only coached some outstanding marks for UC Davis on Friday, he also won the hammer event with a throw of 229-04. Singh is a former All-American at the University of Oklahoma between 2009-11.

The Brutus Hamilton Challenge on Saturday will feature top competitors from several schools and track and field clubs. The meet will be scored as well. Competition begins at 10:20 a.m. in the field events and 1:20 p.m. on the track.
