BERKELEY, Calif. - Katie Barber broke UC Davis' 27-year-old high jump record, Ashley Marshall won two sprints and Marcus Johnson had big PR's in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes as the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams showcased well at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Cal on Saturday.

Shanie Landen added a first-place finish for the Aggies in the 800, Cekarri Nixon won the 400, and the UC Davis teams combined for five marks that affected the programs' all-time leaders lists.

The Brutus Hamilton Challenge featured a scoring meet between Cal, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Utah. UC Davis, club and unattached competitors rounded out the field.

"The opportunity to see some athletes from programs that we don't normally face, like Oklahoma and Utah St, provided a welcome change of pace and allowed us a different measuring stick," said Aggie head coach Drew Wartenburg.

The Aggies rose to the occasion in several events on Saturday.

Barber cleared 5 feet, 7.75 inches at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic two weeks ago which put her No. 3 all-time, but went over 5-8.75 on her second attempt Saturday to break the 1987 school record of 5-8.50 set by Liz Berger in 1987. She finished fourth in Saturday's meet.

Marshall earned three wins in the sprints, taking the prelim and final of the 100 and then later capturing the 200. Her prelim 100 time of 11.49 seconds was her fastest wind-legal time of the year while her 11.58 seconds in the final tied for her third-fastest. Marshall (24.04) edged Morgan Pope of Sacramento State (24.09) for first place in the 200.

Landen and Nixon added the Aggies' other wins on the track Saturday. Landen crossed the finish line of the 800 in 2:10.73 for her first win of the season while Nixon won the 400 in 53.77 seconds, her third first-place finish of the year and her fastest time.

Johnson had a big day for the UC Davis men with three strong races in the 100 and 200. He opened his afternoon with a fifth-place finish in the 100 prelims, going a career-best 10.56 seconds that pushed him from No. 5 to No. 3 all-time at UC Davis. Johnson crossed in 10.62 seconds in the final, his third-fastest time of the season. His previous best entering the day was 10.59 seconds from Mt. SAC last weekend.

Racing in the 200-meter dash later in the meet, Johnson took fourth in 21.15 seconds, smashing his previous best of 21.36 seconds set at Arizona State earlier this month. Saturday's time moved him from a third-place tie to No. 2 all-time, barely behind school-record holder Micah Grant (21.14, 2007). Johnson went past Walter Cranford, who was No. 2 after going 21.30 in 1987.

Praise Adesida and Karl Moran each went up to No. 5 all-time on their respective women's shot and 110 high hurdles lists. Adesida had a PR by more than three feet in the discus, finishing sixth at 154-7 while Moran had a nice PR in the hurdles with his time of 14.29 in the finals. He finished second in the race while beating his previous best of 14.52 seconds from earlier this season.

"Performances this weekend, particularly at the Saturday portion of the meet, give both teams a good note to carry into the month of May and the important meets that lay ahead," Wartenburg said. "We had a number of individuals notch career- and season-bests, even in the some dicey weather conditions, and from here forward every competition comes down to points or advancing through rounds."

Leslie Reed had a second-place finish in the 100 finals in 11.92, just off her career-best of 11.91 from this season, Alycia Cridebring just missed a PR with her runner-up finish in the 1,500 (4:22.87), and Kellie Grigg took second in the 400 hurdles (1:00.28). The Aggie women also captured the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.56 seconds.

Maurice Spikes tied for third for the men in the high jump (6-6.75), Basil Okoroike was third in the triple jump (48-3.50) and Brandon Greenberg took third in the shot put (55-5).

UC Davis also competed on Friday in the Brutus Hamilton Open.

"The Causeway Dual looms large on the schedule next week, and we are excited to test ourselves in a head-to-head environment before heading for the conference championship," Wartenburg said.

The Aggies will visit Sacramento State on Friday afternoon for their dual showdown with the Hornets before sending some athletes to the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford two days later.
