DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women captured the meet-ending 4x400-meter relay on Friday night in near school-record time, lifting the Aggies to a 94-94 tie with rival Sacramento State in the annual Causeway Track and Field Dual at Woody Wilson Track.

Sacramento State posted the rivalry win on the men's side, beating UC Davis 120-68.

Ashley Marshall, Lauren Wallace and Trevor Ehlenbach were each double-winners for the Aggies on Friday, with Marshall taking the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the latter two each winning the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. In all, the women won 10 of the 18 events while the men were victorious in four.

Other winners for the women included Danielle Steffen (pole vault), Praise Adesida (discus), Katie Barber (high jump), Kellie Grigg (400H), Katie Fry (3,000) and the 4x400 relay. Caine Harder (400) and Ethan Ostrom added wins for the men.

"The Causeway Dual meet is a great way to begin our push to the postseason, and seeing both the men's and women's teams go head to head tonight gave us an early look at people in a scored format," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "Our women did a good job closing the scoring gap late in the meet and securing a tie on the final event of the night."

UC Davis trailed 91-89 heading into the final relay but behind the the quartet of Cekarri Nixon, Tonie Williams, Melanise Chapman and Shanie Landen, the Aggies turned in a thrilling time of 3:41.02. It was just off the school record of 3:40.57 set in 2000 and moves them into the No. 2 all-time position.

The relay win capped a come-from-behind effort for the Aggies who played catch-up against the Hornets throughout the meet. Sacramento State took a big lead on the heels of early field event wins and also in the opening 4x100, a race the Aggies dropped their baton and did not finish missing out on scoring points.

But despite the early deficit, UC Davis climbed back with Wallace taking the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 26.90 seconds and then Marshall starting the first of six straight Aggie wins on the track with her victory in the 100, three races later. Marshall blazed to a time of 11.48 seconds, a mark only negated for school-record purposes because it was wind-aided.

Wallace followed with her win in the 800 while Grigg's victory in the hurdles came in 1:00.53, moving her two spots to No. 2 all-time. Marshall completed her double with a first-place in the 200 (24.11) and Fry took the 3K, setting the stage for the exciting finish.

Ashley Marshall sprints on Friday night against the Hornets. She won the 100 and 200.

The Aggies had four other marks that altered top-10 lists. Adesida jumped two spots to No. 2 in the shot put (48-11.75), Landen moved three positions to No. 6 in the 400 (55.49) and Veronica Smart went from No. 10 to No. 8 in the hammer throw (165-3). Catherine Li moved to No. 8 in the triple jump (38-7.50) as well.

Ehlenbach gave the UC Davis men their first win by capturing the 1,500 in 3:51.95, the team's best mark of the season. Harder, running the 400 for just the third time this season, gained another win with his time of 48.91 in the 400. It was the Aggies' third-fastest mark this season.

Two races later, Ehlenbach earned his second victory by winning the 800. Ostrom led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the pole vault, clearing 17-02.75 while Michael Peterson was next at 16-8.75.

UC Davis added a pair of top-10 marks in the field events. Thomas Gore-Schreck picked up the first when he finished third in the javelin at 201-8, a mark that debuts him at No. 5 on that list. Ben Parodi made his first appearance on the shot put ledger at No. 9 after placing third at 53-5.75.

"With the emphasis falling more on places and points than times and marks, we stressed the need for the athletes to compete - plain and simple - this evening," said Wartenburg. "Our efforts yielded some outstanding individual wins, several double-event winners and some seasonal or personal best marks.

"When the dust settles on a meet like this, it's easy to look back and find places where we could have scratched out an additional point or two, and that analysis provides some good perspective for us to use in our approach to the full conference championship meet coming up in two weeks," he added."

Justin Nesbitt won the 100 and 200 to help lead the Hornet men.

UC Davis will have a limited presence at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday before the Big West Multi Championships take place at Cal State Northridge next weekend.

"It's impossible to overstate the importance of carrying momentum and good health into the championship season, and while some of our team will use next weekend to tune up at the Sac State Open, we will also send our multi-eventers south to bring back the opening conference points." said Wartenburg.
