SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Tonie Williams won the 400-meter dash at the Sacramento State Open while all four Aggies had career-best scores at the Big West Multi Championships down south, highlighting UC Davis' track and field action on Saturday.

Kira Rienecker, ninth at the Big West Championships, posted a heptathlon PR with 4,418 points while Tori Edwards (4,052) and Murphy Nicholson (3,768) did the same. Steven Pust improved a spot from Friday in the decathlon, finishing 11th with a career-best 6,044 points at the meet held at Cal State Northridge.

While the multi-event specialists were trying to score early team points toward next week's conference track and field championships, several Aggies traveled over the Causeway for the Sacramento State Open.

Williams led the way there, posting a season-best time of 55.62 seconds in the 400, just off her PR of 55.45 which ranks her fifth all-time at UC Davis. Teammate Sarah Griffith was third in the race.

Williams and Griffith doubled up with the 200-meter dash, finishing third and fifth, respectively. Venus Shabgahi was fourth in the 1,500.

School-record holder Emily Bush had a season-best mark in the pole vault, tying for third at 12 feet, 7.5 inches. Sarah Hussey was just over a foot shy of her PR in the hammer throw with her fifth-place effort of 171-03.

Kaio Sena led the men's efforts at Sacramento State, taking fifth in the 200 in a season-best time of 21.86. Lawrence Doherty (400) and Miguel Aceves (steeplechase) each earned fourth-place finishes.

At Northridge, Rienecker moved up two positions on the final heptathlon leaderboard as she tried to move into a top-eight position and score at least one team point. She highlighted her day with an impressive effort in the meet-ending 800, finishing a close second (2:20.21) to Amanda Alvarez (2:19.66) of Hawai'i.

Rienecker's final score improved her No. 4 all-time position at UC Davis by 43 points.

Edwards finished 12th and Nicholson was 14th after both posted PR's as well. Edwards was seventh in the javelin for her best finish on Saturday while Nicholson was sixth in the 800.

Samantha Ballentine of Hawai'i scored 5,060 points to win the heptathlon.

Pust was particularly strong in the decathlon's pole vault and 1,500. He took third in the pole vault, clearing 14-9 for 760 points and then was second in the 1,500 in 4:28.96, scoring 751 points.

Pust's PR was nearly 300 points better than the 5,781 he scored at the Mondo Mid-Major in April. UC Santa Barbara's Derek Masterson won the conference title with 7,376 points.

"Despite some solid efforts from our multi-group, age and experience carried the day on the podium today," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "It has been a few years since we had multiple finishers, including representatives from both genders, at the conference championship, and the next logical step is to determine what steps need to be taken to put points on the board during this opening weekend."

The Aggies will now turn their full attention toward the Big West Championships at Cal State Northridge next Friday and Saturday. The women will enter the meet as defending champions after winning their first-ever title in exciting fashion last year.

UC Davis will host the Big West Championships in 2014.
