SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Raquel Lambdin led a close 1-2 Aggie finish in the 800-meter run, Brandon Greenberg tied for first in the shot put, and both UC Davis track and field teams combined for 10 runner-up placings on Saturday at the Sacramento State Open at Hornet Stadium.

The meet served as the final tuneup for the Aggies who will travel to Southern California next weekend for the Big West Championships at UC Irvine. The first portion of that meet got underway this weekend with the multi-events. Kira Rienecker was 12th in the heptathlon for the Aggies.

Lambdin, a freshman from Camarillo, posted a season-best time in the 800, crossing in 2 minutes, 11.57 seconds. It's the third-fastest time for the Aggies this season and helped her edge teammate Melinda Zavala who was a very close second in 2:11.78, her best time this spring also.

Greenberg tied with Albert Millan of Sacramento State for top honors in the shot put, posting a mark of 16.33 meters (53 feet, 7 inches) for his second event win of the season. Those two performances led several strong showings for the Aggies in very windy conditions.

"Despite steady winds all day we had a number of people simply put their heads down and compete," said UC Davis head coach Drew Wartenburg. "Several athletes on both the men's and women's sides bettered conference and regionals marks as we enter the postseason. "

Winds buffeted the sprint races, making all the marks wind-aided on Saturday afternoon but providing key improvements which will help the Aggies move up the ranked lists.

Junior Melanise Chapman had one in the 100, finishing an impressive second in 11.59 seconds while Ashley Marshall broke the 12-second barrier with her fifth-place time of 11.95 seconds. Cekarri Nixon's runner-up time of 24.42 in the 200 provided another highlight as did Alana Baber's mark of 24.93.

The women had four other second-place showings, including runner-ups from Tonie Williams in the 400 (56.83), Kayla Carter with a strong effort in the 100 hurdles (13.91-wa), Katie Barber in the high jump (1.67 meters) and Lauren Radke in the pole vault (3.85 meters). Radke's mark was just a half-inch (12-7.50) off her season-best while Barber's tied hers.

Kaio Sena had a wind-aided mark of 10.92 seconds in the 100 as he finished fifth while Corey Hobbs (22.04, 3rd) and Gavin Banks (22.06, 4th) had wind-aided finishes in the 200 for other notable efforts.

The Aggie men posted a trio of runner-up placings including those from Evarardo Villalobos in the 400 (50.33), Alexander Summers in the 5,000 (15:29.58) and Michael Peterson in the pole vault (4.90 meters). Peterson's clearance of 16 feet, 0.75 inches tied his best mark of 2012.

Altogether, UC Davis athletes posted 29 top-five placings at Sacramento State.

"Strong performances from people like Cekarri Nixon, Rocki Lambdin and Kaio Sena indicate that we're beginning to add more depth to our travel squad at exactly the right time," said Wartenburg.

At UC Irvine, Rienecker finished the heptathlon with a strong effort in the final event. Her time of 2:24.25 gave her 767 points for the race and a two-day total of 4,185. She also had totals of 540 points in the long jump and 446 in the javelin.

Barbara Nwaba of UC Santa Barbara set a Big West record with 5,709 points, giving the Gauchos an early 10 team points for next week's Big West Championships. Long Beach State, however, had four of the event's eight placewinners and has 19 points.
