Clancy finishes third in Big West decathlon

May 6, 2017

FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomore Kyle Clancy finished third in the decathlon with a personal-record total of 6,787 points while senior Emma Redick completed her heptathlon debut with a team-best 4,581 points, leading UC Davis action at the Big West Conference Multi Championships at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Track Complex Saturday.

Clancy’s score edges his previous best of 6,779, set at last year’s conference meet, and provided the Aggies with seven team points toward the overall championship. He also moves into seventh in school history, just ahead of Charlie Shattuck (6,784 in 1972). Tommy Grossman added eighth-place points with his 6,522 total while Drake Foote just missed the team scoring with a ninth-place 6,440 score.

Redick snared the eighth-place spot in the overall standings to give UC Davis its first team point. She now ranks sixth in school history in the hep, despite never having competed in a field event prior to the meet. Erinn Beattie finished 12th for UC Davis at 4,474 points while freshman Baileigh Akins was 17th with a 4,060 total.

Clancy opened the meet with a winning 14.84 in the 110 hurdles, good for 869 points; and had the day’s best pole vault of 4.52 meters, providing another 766-point boost. Grossman had the best 1,500-meter run of the meet at 4:41.89, giving himself a 668-point boost to finish the weeekend. Foote led UC Davis in the two Saturday throws, firing a 35.76m (117 feet, 3.75 intches) in the discus throw followed by a 48.74m (159-10.75) in the javelin.

Beattie and Redick finished 1-2 in the hep 800, crossing in 2:20.26 and 2:21.29, respectively. Beattie also had the Aggies’ best marks in the long jump (wind-aided 5.72m) and javelin throw (28.66m). Redick added 663 points in the long jump with her collegiate debut of 5.37m in her third attempt.

Meanwhile in Sacramento, a small contingent of UC Davis student-athletes competed at the Sacramento State Open. The 4x100 relay squad of Jazmen Bunch, Natsumi McGee, Kierra Davis and Mikaela Adolphus highlighted that group with a winning time of 45.29, which improves on the foursome’s No. 5 all-time mark in school history.

The Big West multis meet kicks off the overall conference championships, which takes place at Titan Track on May 12-13. The Aggie men are in third place with their seven points from the dec, trailing Cal Poly (14) and UC Santa Barbara (11). UC Riverside leads the women’s team scoring with 11, one ahead of Long Beach State, which boasted the individual hep champion.
