DAVIS, Calif. - Facing a stiff headwind, UC Davis senior Kira Rienecker was still able to win the 200-meter dash in the final event of the women's heptathlon on Friday's first day and is in seventh place at the Big West Multi-Event Championships at Woody Wilson Track.
Rienecker has 2,718 through the first four events, matching her season-best first-day score which she also had at the Chico Multi Classic at the start of the season. Teammate Murphy Nicholson has 2,388 points - her best opening day this season - and is in 13th place.
Aggie freshman Hawk Hammer, with three season-best marks, tallied 2,875 points through the first five events of the decathlon and is in 11th place. It's also a season-best mark for him after the decathlon's opening day.
The multi-events serve as the start of the Big West Track and Field Championships which will be in full action next weekend, also at UC Davis' Woody Wilson Track. The Aggie women are two-time defending champions.
UC Riverside's Danielle Littleton has 3,028 points to lead the heptathlon while Garrett Demirjian of Long Beach State scored 3,584 to take the lead in the decathlon.
Rienecker opened her day with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a season-best time of 14.58 seconds which gave her 898 early points. She capped her day by winning the 200 in 25.97 seconds, despite facing a -3.2 headwind in the event's final heat. The win delivered her 800 points.
Rienecker, who ranks fourth all-time at UC Davis with 4,508 points from the Chico meet this season, is 97 points behind Melanie Speech of UC Irvine, who is seventh with 2,815. She holds a 63-point lead over Jessica Davis of Cal Poly (2,637). The top eight finishers will score points for their teams for the Big West Championships.
Nicholson had a pair of season-best marks on Friday, finishing the 100-meter hurdles in 15.79 seconds and crossing the finish line of the 200 in 27.70 seconds while also facing a tough headwind (-2.2 m/s). The 200 times tied her season-best mark.
Hammer had season-best marks in the 100 (11.74 seconds), the high jump (1.62m) and the 400 (54.95 seconds). He had his two best decathlon finishes in the long jump (6.07m), which he was eighth, and the 100 where he was seventh.
The heptathlon begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run. The decathlon will start at 11 a.m. and finish with the 110 high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
Admission is free to the multi-event portion of the Big West Championships.
