DAVIS, Calif. - Kira Rienecker scored a career-best 4,555 points to finish seventh in the heptathlon at the Big West Multi-Event Championships at Woody Wilson Track at UC Davis on Saturday, while teammate Murphy Nicholson also had a career-best in the event and Hawk Hammer did the same in the decathlon.

Nicholson scored 4,077 points and finished 13th in the heptathlon while Hammer - who won the pole vault - finished 11th with 5,723 points.

Rienecker's seventh-place finish scored two points toward the Big West Track and Field Championships which will be in full action next weekend at UC Davis. The Aggie women are two-time defending champion.

Rienecker and Nicholson finished the heptathlon strong for UC Davis, posting season-best times in the final event, the 800-meter run. Rienecker took home the event title with her time of 2 minutes, 18.26 seconds while Nicholson was close behind in 2:20.52.

Combined with a season-best mark in the long jump (16 feet, 9.75 inches) and 398 points in the javelin, Rienecker beat her previous best of 4,508 points from the Chico Multi-Classic earlier this season. Nicholson's strong finish in the 800 delivered her 816 points, helping her surpass her previous best of 4,043 points, also from Chico.

Hammer had the local fans in the crowd excited with his win in the pole vault. He cleared 14-4.75 on his first attempt and scored 728 points. He came back in the next event - the javelin - to take third at 169-04, giving him 612 points. Hammer concluded his third decathlon of the season with a season-best time in the 1,500, crossing in 5:03.74.

His total easily beat the 5,282 points he scored at Chico State.

"Ending the multi weekend with any points banked is a plus," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "It's something the past few years we have not relied on. Getting on the board early was the aim this weekend and Kira will look to be someone we bring back to battle in the 100 hurdles next week.

"Hawk got a PR in his third decathlon and we'll see if we can't push him into a contending role in the javelin next weekend."

Hawaii's Kaleigh Morrisson scored 5,210 points to win the heptathlon while Garrett Demirjian of Long Beach State tallied 7,014 points to win the decathlon.

The Big West Championships are being held at UC Davis for the first time. The meet next weekend will be held on Friday and then televised on Saturday by Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
