IRVINE, Calif. - Melanise Chapman won two individual titles, Sarah Sumpter and Alycia Cridebring each won one, and UC Davis held off UC Santa Barbara by a half-point as the Aggies won their first-ever Big West Women's Track and Field Championship at UC Irvine.
Standout Jonathan Peterson was a double-winner in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs for the UC Davis men who finished sixth on their side of the conference meet.
The Aggie women finished with 170 points to edge the Gauchos who had 169.50. Long Beach State finished a distant third with 113. UC Santa Barbara won the men's championship with 179 points while UC Davis tallied 70.
Chapman tied school records with victories in both the 100 (11.67) and 200 (24.09) while also running legs on both of UC Davis' third-place relays. Sumpter, who captured the grueling 10,000 on Friday night, came back to complete a difficult double with a win in the 5,000 on Saturday. Cridebring added a title in the 1,500 before providing crucial points with a second-place finish in the 5,000.
"We couldn't have scripted a more exciting finale for the meet," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "The women knew going into today that the charge was to stay in the hunt for a team title and it happened to come down to the final event.
UC Davis and UCSB were engaged in a close battle all the way to the end with the Gauchos doing all they could by winning the last race, the 4x400 relay, for 10 points. The Aggies, however, finished third for six points, scoring six points and narrowly claiming the team title.
UC Davis had 18 scoring performances on Saturday which included four titles, four runner-up placings, three third-places, and a trio of fourths. The Aggies scored in three of the four field events Saturday and in all 10 events on the track.
Chapman used a pair of oustanding races in the sprints for her two titles. She won the 100 in 11.67 seconds, tying her school record that she also tied in the prelims. She then came back later in the meet to win the 200 in 24.09 seconds, matching her school mark from last season.
Chapman started her day by helping the Aggies' 4x100 relay finish third in 46.44 seconds - the program's third-best relay on the all-time list - before capping her meet by helping the 4x400 cross in a season-best 3:42.93.
Cridebring brought home UC Davis' first win on Saturday with the 1,500. She had the fastest prelim time on Friday and carried the momentum into Saturday's final where she was timed in 4:32.52. Raquel Lambdin was fourth.
Sumpter delivered a meet-record performance in the 5,000 for the Aggies' remaining individual title, leading a 1-2 finish with Cridebring. Sumpter was timed in 16:35.07 while Cridebring came through in 16:59.38 for 18 points.
Katie Fry scored eight points with her runner-up finish in the 800 (2:09.94) while Kayla Carter (100H, 14.01) and Kellie Grigg (400H, 1:01.08) added fourth-place points in their events. Tonie Williams was fifth in the 400 (56.40), Cekarri Nixon (56.79) was sixth and Sarah Griffith (57.03) was seventh. Ashley Marshall added the remaining track points with her sixth-place showing in the 100 in 12.01 seconds, tying her for fourth all-time at UC Davis.
Ashley Hearn, winner of Friday's discus for the second time in her career, added a pair of runner-up performances on Saturday for 16 points. She went 55.53 meters (182-02) in the hammer and 13.70 meters (44-11.50) in the shot put, the latter a career-best that improved her No. 5 all-time position.
Katie Barber also provided key points, taking third in the high jump at 1.69 meters (5-06.50), a career-best mark that puts her into a tie for eighth on the all-time list.
"Seven individual titles really provided a strong impetus but we also depended on crucial performances for points all over," Wartenburg said. "Our first team title provides a great send-off for our seniors as well as a good tone for the future."
The Aggie men scored 66 points during Saturday's competition, getting two individual championships from Peterson who narrowly missed Steve Gerhart's 28-year-old school record of 3:42.67 in the 1,500 by winning in 3:42.78.
That event started his afternoon which was capped by another title late in the meet with the 5,000. Peterson, who owns the school record in that event, won in 14:28. Nathan Strum, who also earned a spot in the 800 final where he was eighth, was third in the 1,500 in 3:44.86, jumping him to fourth all-time.
Jason Chandler added more points for the Aggies, finishing sixth in the 400 in 48.90. The 4x100 and 4x400 relays each finished fifth for the remaining points on the track.
In the field, the Aggies had an impressive showing in the pole vault where Ethan Ostrom and Michael Petersen each turned in career-best efforts that netted second- and third-place finishes at the Big West meet. Ostrom cleared 5.25 meters (17-02.75) while Petersen went 5.15 (16-10.75). Ostrom improved his No. 2 all-time position while Petersen jumped a spot to fourth.
"Jonathon Peterson provided a bright spot on the men's side with two individual titles, both featuring big finishes," said Wartenburg. "Our focus now turns to preparation for the regional meet in Austin (in two weeks)."
The women's championship was the third of the spring for UC Davis which also won Big West championships in men's and women's golf. The Aggies also won the women's cross country banner.
The NCAA West Prelim Meet will be held May 24-26 at the University of Texas.
