FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomore Erinn Beattie captured the individual high jump championship -- and reclaimed her school record in the process -- highlighting UC Davis action on the first day of action at the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships, hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

Beattie posted a winning leap of 1.80 meters, or five feet, 10.75 inches. She tied Long Beach State's Bria Palmer but won the title and the 10 team points based on attempts. Beattie previously shared the UC Davis benchmark of 1.76 meters (5-9.25) with Katie Barber until teammate Morgan Bertsch surpassed it at California's Brutus Hamilton meet on April 29. Beattie, an international relations major from Ventura, California, cleared the bar at 1.77m on her second attempt then needed just one try to beat 1.80m for the conference championship and school mark.

While Beattie was the Aggies' lone champion on Friday, Hannah Kirkegaard came close to adding a second individual title in the day's final event, the women's 10,000-meter run. Another Ventura product, the senior biomedical engineering student crossed the line in 36 minutes, 27.69 seconds to finish second behind UC Santa Barbara's Kelsey O'Connell. Kirkegaard led for most of the race until O'Connell caught up with a little more than 400 meters left. Just seven hundredths of a second separated the two leaders when the bell sounded, but O'Connell ran that final lap in 1:14.33 to Kirkegaard's 1:15.37 in compiling a winning time of 36:26.59.

Nonetheless, Kirkegaard led a second-through-sixth UC Davis finish in that 10K race, resulting in a 26-point bump in the team scoring to close out Friday's session. Freshman Sarah Anderson (36:31.81), sophomore Megan MacGregor (36:36.33), freshman Haley Adel (36:39.20) and 2014 champion Christine Hoffmann (36:39.56) were the next across the line.

Including Anderson, four Aggies each scored six third-place points toward the team score. Bertsch finished third in the high jump with a 1.72m (5-7.5), breaking the three-way tie at that height by virture of clearing each of 1.62m, 1.67m and 1.72m on the first attempt. Junior Michaela Mundt opened the meet with her 57.82m (189-8.25) in the hammer throw, while senior Jordon Rushing kicked off Friday's running events with his time of 9:15.85 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The hammer throw also featured a sizable personal record from junior Morgan Dutra, who finished sixth at 55.42m (181-9.75). That moves her up to fourth in the school record book, and represents an improvement of more than one full meter from her previous PR.

Other UC Davis scorers included Steven Childs, who barely missed his long jump PR with a 7.30m (23-11.25), good for fifth place and four points. Jordy Ceja (32:01.50) and Amar Dholakia (32:12.76) took the seventh and eighth places of the men's 10,000 for another three-point bump. Shot putter Breanna Standifer picked up the eighth-place tally with her 14.07 (46-1.75).

Friday's action also saw numerous Aggies advance to Saturday finals in the running events. The women's sprint trio of freshman Kierra Davis, sophomore Natsumi McGee and junior Jazmen Bunch qualified for the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Davis cut .06 from her previous PR in the 100 to cross in 11.71, good for both fourth in the prelims and fourth in school history. Bunch's 100 time of 11.75 resets her collegiate best, surpassing the 11.76 she posted as a freshman at San Diego State. Her overall PR remains her 11.61 at the 2014 West Coast Relays as a senior at Edison High School.

Later in the evening, Davis (24.09), Bunch (24.29) and McGee (24.44) snared the second, third and eighth seeds in Saturday's 200 final.

Senior Rianna Goins positioned herself in both middle distance races. She finished second in the 1,500 prelim at 4:40.24, then won the 800 prelim at 2:10.83 roughly two hours later. Senior Emma Redick was another prelim winner, posting a 1:00.66 to best the field in the 400 hurdles. On the men's side, Alex Grigoriev matched Goins in the men's version of the 800, running a 1:53.10 in the second heat to edge Cal State Fullerton's Shelby Hernandez, who went 1:53.18 in the third heat.

UC Davis will send two runners to the final heat of the open quarter, as Mikaela Adolphus (55.48) and Rochelle Nadreau (55.60) finished third and seventh, respectively. The Aggies did likewise in the men's 110 hurdles, with Jonathan Perry and Kyle Clancy scoring the two at-large advancements. Perry's seventh-place time of 14.53 eclipsed his previous PR of 14.60 and moved him up to seventh in the Aggie record book.

Finally, UC Davis will field finalists in both 400-meter men's races. Junior Brian Thomas finished fifth in the quarter with a 47.78, while senior Jelani Legohn snared the final spot of the 400 hurdles with his 54.59.

UC Santa Barbara leads both team races, with 59.4 points on the women's side and 70 points on the men's. The boost in the 10K pushed the Aggie women from fifth place into second with 53.2, 13 ahead of third-place Long Beach State. The men closed out Friday's session in fifth place with 20 points.

The Big West Conference track & field meet concludes on Saturday. Field events begin with the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m., while the 4x100 relays open the running schedule at 2:08 p.m.
