AUSTIN, Texas- Four UC Davis Aggies will look to punch their tickets to the NCAA Div. I Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., after advancing through preliminary rounds at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Meet at the University of Texas on Thursday night.
Marshall, the school-record holder and Big West champion in the 100, finished third in her heat and tied for the 10th-fastest time overall in 11.45 seconds, while Chapman, the 2012 conference champion in the event, was fifth in the same heat in 11.59 to also advance.
The top three finishers in each of the six heats plus the next six fastest times advanced to Friday's quarterfinals which will send 12 to Eugene.
Wallace won her heat of the 800 in 2:08.47, leading a trio of runners that crossed at nearly the same time. Baylee Mires of Washington (2:08.61) was second while Stanford's Claudia Saunders (2:08.95) was third. It was well off Wallace's season-best but the only goal on Thursday was to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals where 12 will advance to nationals.
Lambdin ran a career-best time of 4:23.11 in the 1,500 to qualify for Saturday's quarterfinal round. She was fourth in her heat with a mark that jumped her from No. 6 to No. 8 all-time at UC Davis. The top five finishers from each heat plus the next two fastest times will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
Five UC Davis athletes did not advance while facing the elite competition. Sarah Sumpter, who earned All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run last year, narrowly missed a return trip to the national finals after finishing 13th on Thursday in 35 minutes, 18.55 seconds. The top 12 earned berths to Eugene with Dani Stack of Iowa State (35:14.54) getting the final spot just in front of Sumpter, the two-time Big West champion.
Four other Aggies were in action during Thursday's opening day. Cekarri Nixon did not advance in the 400 after crossing in 55.45 while Kellie Grigg (1:0154) and Kayla Carter (1:04.46) did not qualify for the next round in the 400 hurdles. Shanie Landen(2:09.34) was 27th in the 800.
Competition continues on Friday at the University of Texas.
