Goins, Beattie punch tickets to NCAA Championships

May 26, 2017

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore high jumper Erinn Beattie and senior middle distance runner Rianna Goins will represent UC Davis at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, based on their respective finishes in the West Preliminary meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium Friday. Goins placed ninth overall in the women’s 800-meter quarterfinals while Beattie tied for that place in the women’s high jump.

The top three finishers from each 800 quarterfinal race plus the next three runners at large advanced to the NCAA semifinals, held in Eugene, Oregon at legendary Hayward Field from June 7-10. Similarly, the top 12 placers from the high jump earned their spots in the national finals.

The women’s high jump field narrowed from its starting to 48 to 31 after the conclusion of the 1.74-meter (5-foot-8.5) round. Beattie, who took down the opening height of 1.64m on her first attempt, took two tries to best the bar at 1.69m and 1.74m. She then was one of just 10 jumpers to clear 1.79m, and one of four to do so on her third attempt. Beattie is the only Aggie woman in history to beat that height, along with her own school-record 1.80m (5-8.75) that won the Big West Conference championship back on May 12.

As the high jump wrapped up, the women’s 800 was underway on the track. Goins ran a personal-record of two minutes, 5.42 seconds in the first heat, improving on her previous best by 0.30 and strengthening her No. 3 standing in UC Davis outdoor history. However, she placed fourth in that heat, meaning she then had to wait out the two remaining quarterfinal races before knowing her advancement. Five runners went 2:05.30 or faster in the second heat, but the Heat 3 winner went 2:05.72, securing the third at-large berth to Eugene for the Aggie senior human development major from Anaheim Hills.

Goins becomes the second UC Davis woman to advance to the national meet in the 800, joining Lauren Wallace, who earned All-America honors in 2013. Beattie becomes the first to do reach that stage in the high jump, and one of two Aggies to make the NCAA finals in a field event, along with 2012 All-American discus thrower Ashley Hearn.

Beattie and Goins were among five Aggie women in action in Friday’s portion of the West Prelim. Seniors Morgan Dutra and Breanna Standifer finished 25th (49.99m/164-0) and 39th (48.17m/158-0), respectively, in the discus throw. Junior Morgan Bertsch was part of the high jump field with Beattie but was unable to beat the opening height.

The NCAA West Prelims wrap up on Saturday. Drew Xandrine-Anderson and Basil Okoroike will represent UC Davis in the men’s triple jump (11 a.m. PDT), Kyle Clancy goes in the men’s high jump (4 p.m. PDT) while the foursome of Jazmen Bunch, Natsumi McGee, Kierra Davis and Mikaela Adolphus competes in the third heat of the women’s 4x100 relay, also at 4 p.m Pacific.
