Toney breaks pole vault record at NCAA Finals

EUGENE, Ore. — UC Davis senior Marc Toney finished his 2018 outdoor track and field season on a high note after claiming the UC Davis school record outright in the men’s pole vault with a 5.45m/17-10.50 clearance, highlighting his action the NCAA Championships that took place at Oregon’s Historic Hayward Field on Wednesday evening.

The Mountain View, California, native was one of six student-athletes who cleared the 5.45m threshold; however, due to the amount of attempts taken, Toney finished in 10th overall out of the 24 competitors. Chris Nilsen from South Dakota came away with the individual title after claiming the winning height at 5.83m/19-1.50, which also marks the new NCAA meet record that replaced Tennessee’s Lawrence Johnson’s 5.82m/19-1.00 pole vault set in 1996.

This concludes the end of Toney’s senior year season with the Aggies. Looking forward, junior Erinn Beattie will continue the track and field action for UC Davis on Saturday for the high jump final round starting at 3 p.m. ESPN will broadcast the final day of the NCAA Championships, and a live stream will be available on ESPN3.
