Goins advances to national 800 final

June 8, 2017

EUGENE, Ore. - UC Davis senior Rianna Goins finished second in her semifinal heat of the women’s 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 6.76 seconds, earning her a spot in Saturday’s final during Thursday’s portion of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Goins placed 17th among the 24-runner semifinal field but only needed to snare one of the top two places in her heat to move on to Saturday. She edged Iowa State’s Jasmine Staebler by just five hundredths of a second, 2:06.76 to 2:06.81, for that second automatic berth. Oregon’s Raevyn Rogers won that heat at 2:05.63. Another Duck junior, Brooke Feldmeier, led the overall field at 2:03.43 in the third heat.

The top two finishers from each heat, plus the next two fastest at large advanced to the final.

The senior human development major from Anaheim Hills becomes the second Aggie woman to reach the NCAA Div. I 800 final, joining Lauren Wallace, who took eighth nationally back in 2013. Wallace set the school record of 2:02.91 in that national final.

Goins and sophomore Erinn Beattie are both in action for UC Davis on Saturday. Beattie competes in the high jump starting at 3 p.m., then Goins will run in the 800 final at 4:44. ESPN will broadcast the final day, with a live stream available on ESPN3.
