Track Season Begins with Chico Multi Classic

CHICO, Calif. - The outdoor portion of the 2014 UC Davis men's and women's track and field season officially gets underway on Thursday and Friday with the 29th annual Chico Multi-Event Classic, hosted by Chico State.

The meet has been the traditional opening to the outdoor season for UC Davis with three Aggies scheduled to compete in the two-day event. Veterans Kira Rienecker and Murphy Nicholson will represent the UC Davis women in the heptathlon while freshman Hawk Hammer will make his debut in the decathlon for the men.

The first section of the heptathlon will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday while the top section goes at 2 p.m. The opening section of the decathlon starts at 10:15 a.m. while the top group opens competition at 2:30 p.m.

Rienecker is ranked fourth in the heptathlon on the Aggies' all-time list. She earned that spot after scoring 4,375 points at the Mondo Mid-Major Invitational last season. Nicholson highlighted her 2013 season by scoring 3,768 at the Big West Multi Championships. Hammer hails from Alpharetta, Ga.

The remainder of the Aggie team will open their season on Mar. 8 at the Cal.
