DAVIS, Calif. -- After concluding the women's indoor track and field season at the MPSF Championships last weekend, the UC Davis outdoor track and field season officially starts their 2018 campaign with the Cal Opener on Saturday, Mar. 3, at the Edwards Stadium.
The meet will welcome full teams from only two other schools besides UC Davis: Cal Poly and host Cal, and the scoring will be based on a 5-3-2-1 system, excluding relays, which will be on a 5-3 scoring basis.
Saturday's event will start with the men's hammer throw at 9 a.m., followed after by the women's, and will continue to follow through until the running events kick things off for the Aggies at 1:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. UC Davis will then conclude their participation at this season-opening event with the women's 4x400 relay and the men's 4x400 relay at 4:15 p.m. and 4:20 p.m., respectively.
The Aggies enter the season with a strong veteran contingent on both its men's and women's squads, as well as a group of over 20 newcomers, four of which already had an opportunity to experience competing for UC Davis after making an appearance in the 2018 women's indoor track and field season.
Looking back at the highlights from the 2018 indoor season, junior Erinn Beattie set three back-to-back school records in as many weekends for the high jump event, and became the first UC Davis female athlete to jump a six foot measurement. In addition, Beattie also set a new school record in the pentathlon at the MPSF Championships, breaking the 4,000 point barrier to push down previous record holder Caroline Sheldon's 3,453 points set back in 2005. Aside from the jumper, junior Kieana Butler and sophomore Kierra Davis each qualified to the semifinal round on more than one occasion in the 60 dash and 60 hurdles, respectively.
For records broken during the 2017 season for outdoor track and field, relay team of Jazmen Bunch, Natsumi McGee, Kierra Davis, and Mikaela Adolphus tied the school record in the 4x100 relay with a 44.70 time, while Beattie set her already surpassed outdoor high jump record of 1.80m/5-10.75 at last year's Big West Championships.
At last season's conference championships, the Aggie women finished in second place, coming just 1.3 points away from capturing their fifth team win in the past six years, while the men finished in sixth. Aside from the team standings, UC Davis garnered a total of seven Big West Championship titles, two of which came from Aggie standout and recent graduate Rianna Goins after winning the 800 run in the prelims and the finals.
Among other highlights from the 2017 track and field seasons, Davis, the now-sophomore sprinter on the women's squad, captured the Big West Conference Women's Freshman of the Year award, the second to earn such honors since former teammate Holly Tokar back in 2014, while Goins became the first Aggie in the Division I era to compete for UC Davis at the USATF Indoor National Championships.
UC Davis will once again face a challenging schedule that continues with the annual Aggie Open at the Woody Wilson Track and Field next weekend, along with meets that will feature Division I universities such as Stanford, UCLA, Arizona State, and Causeway rival Sacramento State. The Aggies are also scheduled to host the Woody Wilson Classic on Apr. 13-14.
This year, the Big West Conference Championships will take place at CSUN's track on May 11-12, while the post-season events of the Division I NCAA West Prelims and the Outdoor Championships are scheduled to take place in Sacramento, Calif. (May 24-26) and Eugene, Ore. (Jun. 6-8), respectively.
