DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis middle distance standout Katie Fry and sophomore thrower Veronica Smart were named the Big West Track and Field Athletes, respectively, on Tuesday after standout performances this weekend at the Stanford Opener.

This marked the conference's first awards of the 2013 season and marked the first weekly honors for both Aggie athlete.

Fry, a sophomore from Lemon Cove, opened her spring season in winning fashion on Saturday, edging Sydney Gray of Cal across the finish line of the 1,500-meter run. Fry was timed in 4:27.53, just ahead of Gray who crossed in 4:27.94.

Fry's time was a PR by more than two seconds and jumped her two spots to No. 7 on the Aggies' all-time list. It was also the fastest time in the Big West on the opening weekend.

Smart, from Daly City, was a double-winner at Stanford winning the hammer throw with a mark of 47.32 meters (155 feet, 3 inches) while also taking the shot put at 13.72 meters (45-00.25). Her shot put mark was an outdoor PR by more than a foot and moved her to No. 5 all-time at U Davis.

Smart's hammer mark was also a PR and is ranked third in the Big West so far this year.

Long Beach State sprinter Koree Hines and triple jumper Michael Vaughan swept the Big West's awards on the men's side.

UC Davis returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track.
