DAVIS, Calif. - After a loaded week with student-athletes in three different cities, the upcoming weekend brings a relative lighter load for UC Davis track & field, which will send a relatively small delegation to Saturday’s portion of the Chico Twilight Invitational at University Stadium. The Aggie squad will mostly consist of runners in the sprints and hurdles, with a few also competing in the 800 meters and high jump.
Highlighting the previous weekend at Sacramento State’s Mondo Challenge were sprinters Kierra Davis and Jazmen Bunch, who each posted all-time top-five marks in the UC Davis record book in addition to their contributions to the winning 4x100 relay team. Davis moved up to No. 4 on the school’s all-time 100-meter dash list with her second-place 11.78. Bunch won the 200 with a 24.12, putting her fifth in Aggie outdoor history.
Among the team’s Chico Twilight entries, several rank among the Big West Conference’s leaders in their respective events. Senior Emma Redick leads the league in the 400 hurdles with her 1:00.24 set at UNLV in mid-March. Sophomore Mikaela Adolphus ranks second in the open quarter, thanks to her 54.84 at that same meet. Davis’ recent 100 time moved her into fifth in the conference, while her season-best 200 of 23.84 puts her third. Bunch moved up to No. 5 on the Big West’s 200 leaderboard.
On the men’s side, junior Brian Thomas leads three Aggies in the conference’s top 10 in the 400 thanks to his 47.70 at Sac State last weekend. Senior Jelani Legohn sits in fourth on the Big West 400 hurdles tote board, having run a 53.87 at UNLV. Sophomore Steven Childs broke through with a 7.33-meter (24-feet-0.75) in the long jump to put him fourth in the Big West, although he will stick to the 100 and 200 at Chico this weekend.
Overall, 21 different UC Davis student-athletes rate among the top 48 in the standings for the NCAA West Prelims, with four in the top 20. Alex Grigoriev, who will race in the 400 this weekend, ranks 10th in the West among 800 runners (1:49.31). Erinn Beattie’s school-record 1.76m (5-9.25) in the high jump puts her 12th. Sophomore Drew Xandrine-Anderson and senior Basil Okoroike are 15th and 17th, respectively, in the West’s triple jump standings.
