UC Davis hosts 2017 Woody Wilson Classic

April 12, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - In 1935, Eugene Stanley "Woody" Wilson, in his eighth of what would be 32 years at the UC Davis track & field helm, inaugurated the Picnic Day Track Meet as part of the university's annual open house gala. In time, the event drew hundreds of high school athletes from the area, giving Coach Wilson a new nickname -- "Mr. Track."

The Picnic Day meet later became the Woody Wilson Memorial Invitational after Wilson's death in 1959. The university ended its ties with the high school meet in 1967. The collegiate Davis Relays took the now-vacant Picnic Day spot five years later and became the Woody Wilson Relays. In time, the meet expanded to include open competition, clubs, and events for both men and women. By the 2000s, the old blended with the new, as the Wilson meet became a two-day event, with a high school competition on Friday and a college/open meet on Saturday.

Through a quirk in the university calendar, the Woody Wilson Classic does not coincide Picnic Day, but rather the week before: the collegiate/open portion takes place this Saturday, April 15. While the two hammer throws take place on Friday afternoon out at the hammer ring adjacent to Schaal Aquatics Center, the bulk of the Woody meet begins on Saturday. Field events start with the men's javelin at 9 a.m. while the John Pappa Alumni Mile, named for another beloved former Aggie track coach, kicks off the running events at 11 a.m.

The Pappa Mile is one of five events named for key Aggie figures. The women's 1,500 is named for Jill Peckler, an All-American and UC Davis pre-med student, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 21 when she, her brother Jeff and father Jim were killed in an auto accident with a drunk driver back in 1997. The women's 100-meter dash is named in honor of Joe Harper, a former Aggie baseball and basketball standout who has served as a starter for UC Davis meets for decades. The Sue Williams Women's 5,000 honors a legendary coach who mentored cross country and track & field for three decades. Finally, the men's 5,000 is named in memory of Adrian Martinez, whose father Angel starred for UC Davis before becoming a founder for Reebok and Rockport.

The current Aggies take part in three meets this weekend. A sizable portion will stay at home to compete in the Woody, with the largest group heading to the Mt. SAC Invitational, hosted by El Camino College this year. A group will also compete at Long Beach State's Beach Invitational.

A summary of Aggie entries is listed below. Note that all are subject to change, and a few student-athletes appear on conflicting events or even in two different meets as decisions are still pending.
