DAVIS, Calif. - As if a "throwback" celebration of the university's Picnic Day festivities, UC Davis track & field hosts Sacramento State for a popular yet disappearing format of the sport: the head-to-head dual meet. This is the 12th running of the Causeway Classic Dual, which the Aggies swept last year.

Competition begins with the men's hammer throw at 2 p.m., while the first event taking place at the Woody Wilson Track is the women's javelin throw at 2:30. The women's 4x100 relay will kick off the running events at 5 p.m.

Dual meet scoring consists of a 5-3-2-1 format for individual events, in which no more than two athletes from each team may score points for the event. Relays have a 5-3 points basis, with only one team per school scoring points. As a result, scores tend to stay close throughout the meet; in fact, last year's women's competition came down to the final event of the meet. The UC Davis foursome of Emma Redick, Mikaela Adolphus, Rochelle Nadreau and Rianna Goins cross in the first to snare the five points and push the Aggies to a 97-95 victory. Meanwhile, the UC Davis men won their side of the meet in a 105-87 margin.

Not counting relays and multis, UC Davis has nine student-athletes ranked among the West Region's top 48 in their respective events, including two in the top 20: R. Goins' 2:05.72 in the 800 puts her ninth in the standings, while senior Alex Grigoriev's 1:49.31 in the men's 800 has him at No. 20. Sophomore Drew Xandrine-Anderson sits 21st in the triple jump (15.30m). Sophomore Erinn Beattie ranks 24th, thanks to her school-record 1.76m (5-9.25) in the high jump.

Other Aggies among the top 48 in the West: Basil Okoroike (26th, triple jump), Kyle Clancy (29th, high jump), Michaela Mundt (31st, hammer), Redick (36th, 400 hurdles) and Morgan Bertsch (40th, high jump).

Similarly, Sacramento State also has nine in the West's top 48 and two in the top 20. Junior triple jumper Darius Armstead ranks sixth with his 15.83m at his team's home meet on March 17, while long jumper Michael Turner ranks 13th on his 7.62m leap at the Rainbow Relays.
