Track & field heads to Cal's Brutus Hamilton meet

April 27, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - With the Big West Conference track & field championships and the subsequent NCAA West Prelims drawing nearer, UC Davis will compete in another major Northern California meet in an effort to improve on its season-best performances. The Aggies will head down Interstate 80 to Cal's premiere annual home meet, the Brutus Hamilton Open and Challenge.

Named for the legendary former Golden Bear head coach, the Hamilton meet consists of an open meet and distance carnival on Friday, then the invitational Challenge portion of Saturday.

UC Davis comes off a split against local rival Sacramento State in the annual Causeway Classic Dual meet last Friday. The Aggie women won their end of the meet by a 110-81 score, while the men fell to the Hornets, 102-89. While dual meets tend to emphasize scoring over marks, numerous Aggies posted significant individual performances in the meet. Perhaps most notable was the triple jump tandem of sophomore Drew Xandrine-Anderson and senior Basil Okoroike, who notched the Nos. 2 and 3 marks in school history in an epic meet finale. Xandrine-Anderson posted a leap of 15.74 meters (51-feet-7.75) to earn Big West Conference Men's Field thlete of the Week distinction. Okoroike also broke the 51-foot threshold with his 51-3 mark (15.62m). The two currently rank 1-2 in the Big West Conference.

Sprinter Natsumi McGee captured the conference's Women's Track Athlete of the Week award thanks to wins in the 100 (11.77), 200 (24.25) and the 4x100 relay (45.42). The relay time, compiled by the foursome of McGee, Mikaela Adolphus, Jazmen Bunch and Kierra Davis, now ranks fifth in school history.

Other bests during the Causeway meet include Brian Thomas' 21.74 in the 200 and 47.54 in the 400, which respectively ranks ninth and fourth on the Big West leaderboard. Jordon Rushing went 3:52.94 in the 1,500, now third in the league. Jelani Legohn posted a 53.74 in the 400 hurdles to move himself into the No. 5 slot in the Big West.

On the women's side, pole vaulters Holly Tokar and Stasia Kubicki hit matching jumps of 3.91m (12-10) to share third place in the Big West standings. Kubicki also moved up to a tie for No. 4 in school history with that mark (Tokar already ranked third all-time). The women's 4x400 relay leads the league at 3:42.46. Breanna Standifer fired a 51.62m (169-4) throw in the discus to move into fourth among the conference leaders. Erinn Beattie's 5.73m (18-9.75) puts her ninth in the long jump and would rate among the school top 10 but no wind reading was recorded to make it a legal mark. Olivia Goins notched a 2:12.10 in the 800 to rank eighth in the conference.
