IRVINE, Calif. - Sprinter Cekarri Nixon and high jumper Katie Barber turned outstanding performances last weekend at Cal into honors on Tuesday when they were named the Big West Women's Track and Field Athletes of the week, respectively, it was announced by the league.
Nixon, a junior from Sacramento, finished first in the 400-meter dash in 53.77 seconds after running a leg on the Aggies' winning 4x100 relay (45.56 seconds) at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge on Saturday. She also took seventh in the 200 in 24.64 seconds.
Nixon's time in the 400 is currently ranked first in the Big West, No. 21 in the NCAA West Region and No. 42 nationally.
Barber, a junior from Moorpark, broke Liz Berger's high jump record of 5 feet, 8.5 inches from 1987 when she cleared 5-8.75 at Cal on Saturday. Her mark ranks her second in the Big West, ties her for 28th in the region and ties her for 57th in NCAA Div. I.
Nixon is the third UC Davis women's track athlete in a row to earn the Big West's weekly honor while Barber is the second field athlete in the past three weeks. Overall, the Aggie women have received a conference-high eight Big West Athlete of the Week awards this season.
Michael Kroger (hurdles, 4x400 relay) of UC Riverside and pole vaulter Conner Rouse of Long Beach State earned the men's awards this week.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday when it travels to Sacramento State for the annual Causeway Classic Dual.
