NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - While the bulk of the Big West Track and Field Championships will take place next weekend at Cal State Northridge, UC Davis decathletes and heptathletes will look to score early points at the conference's multi-event championships on Friday and Saturday.

The remainder of the Aggies' teams will be in the local area this weekend for the Sacramento State Open with many of them looking to get final final tuneups for the conference championships.

Kira Rienecker, Tori Edwards and Murphy Nicholson will represent UC Davis in the 16-competitor heptathlon while Steven Pust is one of 11 athletes entered in the decathlon. Heptathletes will open at 2:30 p.m. on Friday with their first four events; the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200. Decathletes will start 30 minutes earlier and endure the 100, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400.

The competition will reconvene on Saturday with points awarded to the top eight finishers.

Rienecker scored 4,185 points in last year's meet but finished outside of the scorers. The only two scorers that return to this year's competition are Wendy Izquerido of Long Beach State and Jazmine Lewis of UC Riverside who finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Rienecker scored a career-high 4,375 points at the Mondo Mid-Major in April while Edwards scored 4,047 points and Nicholson tallied 3,695, also at that meet.

UC Davis did not have any entries in last year's decathlon but will look to Pust who opened with 5,593 points at the Chico Multi Meet in March before surpassing that with 5,781 points at the Mondo Mid-Major. Defending champion Derek Masterson (7,355 points) returns to this year's meet.

Many of the rest of the Aggies will use the Sacramento State Open to stay sharp for next week's meet. Competition will begin with the hammer throw at 10:30 a.m. while events on the track start with the 5,000 at 10:45 a.m. The 4x400 relays will conclude the meet beginning at 3:10 p.m. although the meet may move ahead of schedule if situations warrant.
