Women's cross country gets the win at Putah Creek

Sept. 2, 2017

DAVIS, Calif.-- Junior Jordy Ceja won the individual first place title in the 6K race and sophomore Julia Lemak won the individual first place title in the 4K race to help secure the women's squad team win at the annual Aggie Open on Saturday morning at the Putah Creek Reserve Course.

The men's squad placed three of the five total UC Davis runners in the top 10, but it was not enough to keep their winning streak over the Hornets, 25-30. Ceja was eight seconds better than the second-place finisher on the men's side en route to individual honors, crossing in a time of 18:40.2. Following 10 seconds later came graduate student Jon Horvath, placing in third with a time of 18:50.3.

Freshman Ryman Crone finished with a debut time of 19:02.1 to finish in seventh, senior Jesus Salas Jr. finished in 12th (19:43.5), and senior Anthony Sanchez finished in the 13th place with a time of 19:44.5 to end the count for UC Davis's team score.

On the women's squad, Lemak and Sarah Anderson got the first and second place spots with close finish times of 14:48.9 and 14:50.5, respectively, to lead a group of five runners in the top five, and six in the top 10. Anderson's new 4K career best of 14:50.5 is four seconds faster than her previous one set at 2016 Aggie Open.

The Aggies again far out-distanced the Hornets, ending it all with a final score of 18-40 to officially complete the 2017 Aggie Open event. With this team victory, the women extend their winning streak to make it a 10 straight over Sacramento State for this season opener.

Sophomore Haley Adel was fourth across the line with a time of 15:02.9, a two second difference from her career best time of 15:00, set at last year's Aggie Open. The next two place finishers were junior Megan MacGregor (15:06.0) and sophomore Mandy Wainfan (15:22.6) to end the count for their team score.

Freshman Lara Vetter was the sixth runner on the women's squad to place in the top 10, placing 8th with a debut time of 15:26.6. Freshman Jordan Stefani was 14th (15:58.8), sophomore Lauren Powers was 16th (16:03.5), freshman Alexis Ballman, sophomore Tatjana Kunz, and freshman Morgan Bowman took 17th (16:17.6), 18th (16:31.0), and 19th (17:11.6), respectively, to round out the Aggie competitors.

The cross country squads will have a full week off from competition before their next event at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 16 in Riverside, Calif.
