SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Sarah Sumpter placed second overall and Alycia Cridebring was fifth to lead the UC Davis women's cross country team as the Aggies tied for second place at the Pac-12 Preview, hosted by UCLA at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif.
UC Davis placed second only to 27th-ranked Texas which recorded 56 points to the Aggies' 73. Northern Arizona also scored 73 to tie UC Davis, while host UCLA was fourth with 97 points.
"Today's meet gave us a look at some quality teams in a small field," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "Racing in a setting like that really means that you have to keep teammates in close contact, and we let that objective get away from us a little bit this evening."
Sumpter clocked in at 17:07, finishing just five seconds out of first place as Cal Poly's Laura Hollander clocked in at 17:02 to win the women's 5K race.
Texas' Sarah Sutherland and Marielle Hall finished third and fourth, respectively, while Cridebring's time of 17:38 put her in fifth place.
"Sarah did a great job patiently moving up and just missed the win," said Wartenburg. "Alycia also moved well for a solid finishing position, but we have some gaps to whittle down, particularly as we make our foray into races with larger overall fields. It was great to get a look at some conference and regional teams as well as some from out of region and we look forward to setting our sights on the Pre-Nationals meet."
Six Aggie women finished in the top-30 as junior Katie Fry was 14th in a time of 18:03 while Raquel Lambdin followed in 24th place in a time of 18:31. In just her second race as an Aggie, freshman Christine Hoffman was 28th with a time of 18:44 and Shannon Harcus was 30th, recording a time of 18:47.
Lauren Wallace came in 35th to round out the Aggie scoring, clocking in at 19:05, while Hilary Teaford finished in a time of 19:43.
The UC Davis women return to action, alongside the men's team, at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29. The men's 8K race begins at 9:50 a.m., followed by the women's 6K race at 10:30 a.m.
