SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Jordy Ceja and sophomore Sarah Anderson were the first Aggies to cross the line for their teams, ending the day with a 10th and eight team place finish for the men and women, respectively, on Saturday morning at the Capitol Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif.
The men's squad raced first and finished the 8K race in 10th with a team score of 237 points. Starting the scoring for the Aggies was Ceja, finishing in sixth with a time of 24:26.9, just three-tenths of a second away from the fifth place finisher. Graduate student Jon Horvath was the second Aggie on the men's squad to contribute to the team score, placing in 21st with a time of 24:51.1.
Freshman Ryman Crone finished in 55th with a time of 25:28.8, which is 30 seconds faster than his 8K time at the 2017 UC Riverside Invitational. Senior Jesus Salas Jr. ran his first 8K race this season, ending his day in 108th with a time of 26:17.7. Junior Kiernan Elam crossed the line at 26:25.6, just eight seconds after teammate Salas, to get the 115th place mark. Sophomore Zachary Katzman and sophomore Tom Robey finished in 137th (26:41.7) and 174th (27:25.1), respectively, to round out the team score for the Aggies.
Junior transfer James De Mello, who made his UC Davis cross country debut at this invite, completed his race with a time of 28:06.6, finishing the day in 197th.
Following the men's squad, the women finished the day with an eight place with New Mexico State with a team score of 183 points. For the second time in a row, Anderson led the 6K race for the Aggies, finishing in 14th place with a time of 21:24.5, which is 16 seconds faster than her 6K PR set last season. Seven seconds later, sophomore Julia Lemak crossed the line with a time of 21:31.5, to place in 19th. Sophomore Haley Adel finished in 28th, stopping her clock at 21:43.1.
Junior transfer Christine Bayliss, who made her UC Davis cross country debut at this year's Capitol Cross Challenge, finished in 51st with a time of 22:17.2. Freshman Alexis Ballman was the the next Aggie to cross the line, cutting her 6K PR down by 32 seconds to get a new PR time of 22:46.3, placing her in 80th, while sophomore Lauren Powers rounded out the team score for the Aggies with a time of 23.49.0 and a 140th individual place finish.
The Aggies will have one week off from competition before returning on Oct. 14 for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif.
