SACRAMENTO --
For the second straight week, the combination of senior Hannah Kirkegaard and sophomore Jordy Ceja paced the UC Davis cross country teams, helping their respective squads to fifth-place finishes among Division I schools competing at the 2016 Capital Cross Challenge co-hosted by Sacramento State at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Saturday morning.

In a preview of the course for this year's NCAA West Regional race, the Aggie men were the first off the line and finished with 149 points, while the women ended the day with 135, both trailing Arizona State, which finished with 39 and 62 points, respectively to sweep the team titles. The men were second behind Cal State Fullerton (125) among Big West Conference schools competing the meet, finishing ahead of UC Riverside, Long Beach State, and CSUN, while the women duplicated the effort, edged out by the Titans (130), but finishing ahead of UC Riverside, Hawai'i, CSUN, and Long Beach State.

The men were up first on Saturday and Ceja continued his hot start to the 2016 campaign, finishing as the first Aggie across the line for the third straight meet. After finishing ninth at the Bill Dellinger Invitational two weeks ago, Ceja cut 45 seconds off his 8K time in Oregon, posting a career-best 24:10.3 to place 12th and finish as the third Division I runner to cross the line behind Arizona's CJ Albertson (23:47.9) and Pepperdine's Nick Heath (24:06.5).

Junior Austin Goins posted his best 8K finish of the year, crossing the line in 28th with a time of 24:41.2 -- more than a minute faster than his time from the Dellinger Invitational -- and better than 10 seconds faster than his previous collegiate 8K best set at the Stanford Invitational last season. Freshman Salem Bouhassoun set a season-best in finishing 62nd (25:07.0), junior Oliver Abundez-Dominguez continued to lower his 8K best with a time of 25:14.6 to finish 71st, and freshman Zachary Katzman with a season-best time of 25:43.3, rounded out the scoring group for the Aggies.

Other UC Davis finishers included junior Jon Horvath (121st, 26:03.1), freshman Fenn Hoppe (135th, 26:33.9), and freshman Anthony Sanchez (141st, 26:44.6).

Kirkegaard, who has finished among the top five in each of her first two races this season, posted a third top-10 finish of 2016 on Saturday, finishing eighth with a time of 21:06.6 in her first 6K race of the year. After making her Division I debut two weeks ago with a 38th-place finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Oregon, freshman Kristen Leung broke through with a top-20 finish in Sacramento, ending the race in 18th with a time of 21:17.6.

Sophomore Katherine Gallaher (37th, 21:32.9) and freshman Haley Adel (52nd, 21:54.5) were joined by senior teammate Nicole Lane (61st, 21:59.6) to round out the scoring group for the Aggies. Other UC Davis finishers included sophomore Megan MacGregor (78th, 22:12.5), junior Brynna Thigpen (92nd, 22:32.3), senior Olivia Goins (101st, 22:39.8), and freshman Sarah Anderson (110th, 22:54.4).

Gallaher set a new collegiate 6K cross country best time with her finish, shaving 44 seconds off her previous best of 22:17 set at last year's Doc Adams Open. MacGregor also bested her top collegiate 6K time of 23:02, also set at the Doc Adams Open last season.

The Aggies are off until they split the squad between the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind., and the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., on Oct. 15.
