STANFORD, Calif. -
Jenny Wilson crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 56 seconds on Saturday, capturing top honors in the women's 5,000-meter open race at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational on Saturday and highlighting UC Davis' day at the highly competitive event at Stanford Golf Course.
Justin Hurd placed 35th in the men's 8K invitational as UC Davis finished eighth in the team standings, Jorge Murillo was sixth in the men's 8K (non-scoring) open, and Louisa Hayes was 26th in the women's 6K invitational. UC Davis placed eighth in the women's invitational team standings.
Wilson had an impressive day for the Aggies on Saturday, winning her 5K race in 18:56, a full 30 seconds ahead of Christie Farson of UC Santa Barbara, who was timed in 19:26 as she led a trio of Gauchos runners across the line.
Kelsey Kaiser was fifth in 19:45 as the Aggies then placed six of the next 10 finishers in the non-scoring race. Katie Sheldon was sixth, just eight seconds behind Kaiser, Karine Graham was eighth in 19:58, Tina Downey took 10th and Maura Tyrell was 11th. Crystal Whitlow was close behind in 14th place to round out the Aggies' top seven finishers in the race.
Both the Aggie men and women each placed eighth in the invitational races, which each featured some of the top collegiate runners in the country. Hays, who was UC Davis' top finisher in the season-opening Aggie Invitational on Sept. 13, led the way again by placing a strong 26th with a time of 22:19. Hays finished just two seconds behind Penny Splichal of powerhouse Arkansas, who was 25th in 22:17.

was 70th and Michelle Solone
was 85th to help pace the Aggies. UCLA scored just 37 points to win the invitational, beating host Stanford which was second with 56. UC Davis had 257 points. Alicia Craig of Stanford won the race in 20:25.
On the men's side, Hurd was the Aggies' top runner in the tough 8K invitational. His time of 25:19 placed him 35th, leading four UC Davis runners in the top 60. Tim Helms was 50th in 25:37 and was followed closely by Justin Rau in 54th and Chris Ferren-Cirino 57th. Matt Laye crossed in 84th while Jon Gire (91st) and Tony Ahr (95th) also placed well among the 175 finishers.
The Aggies scored 219 points in the men's race which was won by defending NCAA champion Stanford, which scored just 18. Cal Poly was second with 54. The Cardinal's five scoring runners all finished among the top six racers, led by Ian Dobson who won the race in 23:46.
Murillo's sixth-place showing in 26:24 led the Aggies in the men's open as UC Davis placed all five of its runners in the top 18. Danny Chaves was 10th in 26:41, Matt Cooley was just two seconds back in 11th, Mike Weber finished in 14th and Chris Pecot was 18th.
Former Aggie All-American Steve Laurie won the open race in 24:59.
UC Davis is at the Willamette (Ore.) Invitational next Saturday.
