Ceja and Anderson pace respective squads at Penn State

With the split of the men's cross country squad between two events taking place on the opposite sides of the country this week, it was junior Jordy Ceja and sophomore Sarah Anderson who once again paced the Aggies with their performances at the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Blue-White Golf Course in State College, Penn.

The UC Davis men finished 12th as a team in the 8K event, with Ceja crossing the line in a time of 26:03, while graduate student Jon Horvath was the second Aggie to finish, placing in 59th and clocking in his time at 26:39.

For the reamining Aggie performances on the men's squad, freshman Ryman Crone timed in at 27:40 to earn a 106th place finish, while junior Kiernan Elam finished seven seconds behind Crone to end his day in 109th with a time of 27:47. Sophomore Zachary Katzman clocked in his time at 27:57, ten seconds later than Elam, to place in 114th and round out the scoring for the Aggies. Senior Jesus Salas concluded the UC Davis men's participation in this event with a 29:49 time and a 123rd place finish.

Anderson was again the first to finish for the women's squad, finishing the 6K race with at time of 21:35. The second runner to cross the line was sophomore Julia Lemak, clocking in a time of 21:49 to earn a 72nd place finish.

Junior Christine Bayliss finished in 96th with a 22:11 time, beating her previous career best earned at this year's Capitol Cross Challenge by six seconds.

Sophomore Haley Adel was the next Aggie contingent on the women's squad to cross the line, ending her day with a 22:40 time and finishing in 130th, while freshman Alexis Ballman rounded out the scoring for the women's team with her 23:16 time and 151st place finish.

Home state favorite Penn State got a first place victory in the women's 6K event with 44 points, along with a second place finish in the men's 8K event with 60 points. UC Davis finished their events with 336 points from the men's squad, and 410 points from the women's squad.

Meanwhile, UC Davis sent three Aggie runners from the men's squad to race at Baylands Regional Park for the 2017 Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. Senior Anthony Sanchez was the first out of the three to cross the line, finishing in 124th place with a time of 26:03.5.

Sophomore Xolan Brown was the next Aggie contingent to finish the race, ending his day in 143rd place with a clock time of 26:35.6, which is 15 seconds faster than his previous 8K career best earned last season, while junior James De Mello rounded out UC Davis' participation at this invitational with a time of 27:37.8, and beating his previous 8K career best by 29 seconds.
