Women's 6K Results | Men's 8K Results
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- UC Davis seniors Erika Barr and Christine Hoffmann each posted top-10 finishes on the women's side, while senior Trevor Halsted was ninth in the men's race, helping the UC Davis men's and women's cross country teams to third-place finishes overall at the 2015 Big West Conference Championships on Saturday morning at the UC Riverside Ag Ops Course in Riverside, Calif.
The women totaled 69 points in a tight top three as Cal Poly clinched its third conference title in the last four seasons with 39 points, while UC Santa Barbara was second with 59 points. It marked the fifth consecutive season -- and the seventh time in nine seasons -- that the Aggies finished among the top three at the league championships.
On the men's side, UC Davis bounced back from a disappointing sixth-place finish in 2014 to post its best finish since ending up third at the 2013 conference meet. It is the fifth time since joining the Big West that the Aggies have finished among the top three. Defending champion UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly controlled the men's race, finishing with 31 and 36 points, respectively.
UC Riverside's Faith Makau (20:27.50) and UC Santa Barbara's Bryan Guijarro (24:01.94) took home individual titles.
Six of the eight UC Davis runners posted season-best 6K times on the day led by Barr, who posted her best finish ever at the conference championships after crossing the line in a collegiate-best 6K time of 20:38.71 to earn All-Big West honors for the first time in her cross country career. The senior from Simi Valley, Calif., topped her previous best finish of 12th place at last year's league meet and shaved nearly 13 seconds off her previous collegiate best of 20:51.9 set two weeks ago at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Kentucky.
Senior Christine Hoffmann, last year's runner-up, earned her second consecutive All-Big West honor by finishing the 6K course in a time of 20:46.20 for sixth place. She joins Sarah Sumpter (2009, 2011-13), Alycia Cridebring (2012-13), and Katie Fry (2012-13), as multiple All-Big West award winners in UC Davis history.
After missing the 2014 championships, Fry finished in a season-best time of 21:17.80 to place 16th, junior Nicole Lane was 18th with a season-best time of 21:25.75, and freshman Muna Alhamad was 27th in a collegiate-best time of 21:52.90 in her championship debut, to complete the UC Davis scoring group.
Juniors Rianna Goins (21:54.52) and Clara MacLeod (season-best 21:55.24) formed a tight pack with Alhamad, finishing in 28th and 29th, respectively, while freshman Katherine Gallaher made her Big West Championship debut with a collegiate 6K best time of 22:32.74, to round out the Aggie entries.
After missing out on last year's championships due to injury, Halsted returned and picked up his third career All-Big West honor with his ninth-place finish, crossing the line in a time of 24:30.94, to pace the Aggies, breaking the 25-minute mark for the fourth time in four 8K races this season. He joins Jon Peterson (2009-11) as the only UC Davis men to finish among the top 10 at the Big West Championships three times in school history.
Seniors Amar Dholakia (24:51.87) and Nick Ratto (25:14.94) posted top-25 finishes, in 16th and 24th, respectively, while senior Cody Nguyen (25:25.80) in 29th and senior Jordon Rushing (25:42.67) in 33rd wrapped up the scoring group for UC Davis.
Patrick Fitzgerald finished 34th in a time of 25:45.20, just ahead of freshman Jordy Ceja, who was one spot back with a time of 25:45.42 in his championship debut. Sophomore Austin Goins (26:22.60) and junior Luke Dorman (26:45.66) finished 47th and 54th to close out the day for the men's squad.
UC Davis returns home to host the 2015 Doc Adams Open on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Putah Creek Reserve Course near campus. The women's 6K kicks things off at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 10:40 a.m. More information on the meet is available online at http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ucda/sports/c-xc/auto_pdf/2015-16/misc_non_event/15-XC-DocAdams-Info.pdf.
