GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Senior Laura Cherdack placed 35th in the women's open 6-kilometer run and junior Will Merchad finished 53rd to lead UC Davis runners in the men's open 10K at the 2003 USA Track & Field National Club Cross Country Championships at Bryan Park Sunday.

The Aggies did not enter as a team, but instead the 14 members of the UC Davis men's and women's cross country teams competed as individual unattached runners in the event. The national meet served as a season finale for the Aggies, who are not eligible for NCAA Championships during their four-year transition period toward full-fledged Division I membership.

Cherdack crossed the finish line at 22:06.8. Lulu Hays finished 41st with a 22:16.0 time, then Priscilla Moreno was the third Aggie to finish, posting a 53rd-place time of 22:44.9. Jenny Wilson was 55th at 22:49.1, Michelle Solone placed 70th at 23:12.6, Jessica Neu was 89th at 23:55.0 and Chloe Glare finished 91st with a 23.59.5 clocking.

On the men's side, Merchad was the first UC Davis finisher with a 32:28.6 performance. He was followed 13 places later by teammate Matt Laye who took 66th at 32:53.6. Chris Ferren-Cirino placed 77th at 33:10.6, Justin Hurd finished 86th at 33:33.3, Matt Cooley was 103rd at 33:57.4, Justin Rau was 109th at 34:03.7 and Tim Helms rounded out the Aggie finishers with a 115th-place time of 34:12.8.

The event had a total of 188 runners in the men's 10K and 127 competitors in the women's 6K race. Melissa Buttry, an unattached competitor from Shenandoah, Iowa, won the women's race at 19:59.9. Alan Webb of Nike TC won the men's race with a time of 30:13.1, barely beating unattached runner Daniel Lincoln, who crossed in 30:13.4.

The UC Davis women had competed in a record 22 Division II Championships since the NCAA began sponsoring women's championships in 1981. The Aggies finished in the top 10 in all but one of those appearances. The UC Davis men had also enjoyed national success, three top-five and 10 top-16 finishes in the past 12 years.
