IRVINE, Calif. - Trevor Halsted of the cross country and track and field teams, and volleyball player Allison Whitson were named UC Davis' Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year and were honored this week in Anaheim.
The Aggie duo joined male and female representatives from the other nine Big West schools in being recognized for oustanding academic and athletics achievements during the 2012, calendar year.
The pair were honored at a celebratory breakfast held in conjunction with the Big West Basketball Tournaments with fellow student-athletes, campus and conference administrators, supporters and family in attendance.
Halsted, a sophomore from Davis, was named the Aggies' MVP during last cross country season after earning All-Big West honors and placing 20th at the rugged NCAA Div. I West Regional. The biomedical engineering major is ranked first in his class in the College of Engineering, is a Regents Scholar and is a member of the Integrated Studies Honors Program.
Whitson, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter who completed her senior season this past fall, earned All-Big West first team accolades three times as an Aggie and is ranked among the top five all-time UC Davis players in four career categories. Whitson is majoring in managerial economics, is ranked in the top 15 percent of her class and plans to pursue an MBA after playing professional volleyball in Europe.
Besides the Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year, UC Davis was well-represented on the Big West's Scholar-Athlete roll. A total of 121 student-athletes, representing all the conference sports, were named to the list for oustanding academic achievement.
