DAVIS, Calif. - Eleven standout student-athletes - including the first-ever set of triplets to sign national letters of intent at UC Davis - form an oustanding recruiting class for the UC Davis men's and women's track and field and cross country programs, head coach Drew Wartenburg has announced.
Joining the Aggie men's track program are Alex Grigoriev (Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego), James Warwick (Modesto Christian HS, Modesto) and Austin Goins (Canyon HS, Anaheim Hills), while Goins' triplet sisters, Olivia and Rianna, help comprise the signees for the women's team. Also joining UC Davis will be Amanda Babicke (Pojoaque Valley HS, Santa Fe, N.M.), Lauren Kinloch (Granite Bay HS, Roseville), Hanna Kirkegaard (Ventura HS, Ventura), Breanna Standifer (Elsinore HS, Wildomar, Calif.) and Holly Tokar (Foothill Technology HS, Ventura).
"We are pleased with the overall strength of the 2013 signing class, and our staff feels as though we have identified a group of student-athletes that will make important contributions in key areas for several years to come," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "The efforts made throughout the recruiting cycle focus on matching the goals of prospective student-athletes with our institution's academic and athletic profile, and it is always very satisfying to sign young men and women and then watch them achieve at high levels in the classroom and in competition settings throughout the spring."
Austin, Olivia and Rianna Goins, along with Kirkeegard, will also compete on the Aggie cross country teams. All of the newest UC Davis student-athletes will join the Aggie programs this fall.
UC Davis has established itself as a Big West Conference force in both cross country and track and field. The Aggie women won the 2011 league title in cross country and is two-time defending champion in track and field.
"We have made conscious efforts in recent years to expand our recruiting lens to include a much broader geographic area, and for the second year in a row we have met with good success in bringing individuals from a variety of sections, leagues and programs throughout the state," Wartenburg said. "Both the men's and women's squads feature a strong core of returning athletes for the 2013-14 year, and the prospect of folding in frosh with ever-heightening levels of accomplishment helps the continued evolution of our program as a whole."
