UC Riverside Invitational Meet Information

DAVIS, Calif.— After opening the season with a pair of individual victories and a women's team win two weekends ago at the Aggie Open, the UC Davis men's and women's cross country teams hit the road for the first time in the 2017 season, heading south for the 37th annual UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The women's 6K begins at 7:30 a.m., with the men's 8K following after at 8:05 a.m. Both races will take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course, which will also be the same course to host this season's Big West Conference Championships on Oct. 28. Although this location has been a familiar site for UC Davis cross country over the years (the Riverside site has been the host of six Big West Championship races since 2007), Saturday marks only the second time the Aggies have ran on this course during the regular season.

Starting off the morning on the women's side will be a group of eight runners in this invitational race. Junior Megan MacGregor will be joined by sophomores Haley Adel, Sarah Anderson, Julia Lemak, Lauren Powers, and Mandy Wainfan, and freshmen Alexis Ballman and Lara Vetter.

Looking back at the Aggie Open event that took place on Sept. 2, Lemak placed first (14:48) and Anderson placed second (14:50), and Adel (15:02) and MacGregor (15:06) were the next two Aggies to place, resulting in a total of four runners taking up the top five spots. Vetter, who made her debut with an eight place finish at the season opener, rounded out the scoring for the Aggies with a time of 15:26.

Anderson, whose time at this year's season opener was the fastest 4K of her collegiate cross country career by four seconds, as well as Lemak, return to the UCR Agricultural Operations Course where they placed 19th (22:39.9) and 11th (22:17.8), respectively, at the Big West Conference Championships last season.

On the men's side, the same number of runners on the women's traveling squad are scheduled to make the trek down to Southern California. Junior Jordy Ceja, who finished first for the second year in a row at the 2017 Aggie Open (18:40), as well as 23rd at the Big West Conference Championships with a time of 26:02.7 last season at this course, will be joined by graduate student Jon Horvath and Thomas Madden, seniors Anthony Sanchez and Jesus Salas Jr., junior transfer Kiernan Elam, sophomore Zachary Katzman and freshman Ryman Crone at this invitational. Horvath and Katzman, two other Aggies in addition to Ceja that have been acquainted with the UCR course, finished in 39th (26:44.0) and 59th (28:44.6), respectively, at the 2016 Big West Conference Championships.

Crone made his debut at the Aggie Open two weekends ago with a time of 19:02 to earn him a seventh place finish. Salas finished his race in 10th at this event with a time of 19:43, while Sanchez claimed the next place finish with a time of 19:44 and rounding out the scoring group for the Aggies. The Riverside Invitational will serve as Elam's and Madden's cross country debut for UC Davis.

Following the Riverside Invitational, the Aggies will have a one-week break before resuming their season on Sept. 30 at the Capitol Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif.
