DAVIS, Calif. — Coming off a women’s eight place and a men’s 10th place finish at the Capitol Cross Challenge on Sept. 30, the UC Davis men’s and women’s cross country teams will split up as the women and some of the men head to State College, Penn., to run at the Blue-White Gold Course for the Penn State National Open on Friday, while the other menacers of the men’s team will stay behind to run at the Baylands Regional Park for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif. on Saturday.
At the Penn State National Open, the men’s squad will include graduate student Jon Horvath, senior Jesus Salas, juniors Jordy Ceja and Kiernan Elam, sophomore Zachary Katzman, and freshman Ryman Crone, while the women’s squad will be represented by juniors Megan MacGregor and Christine Bayliss, sophomores Haley Adel, Sarah Anderson, and Julia Lemak, and freshman Alexis Ballman.
To recap on individual highlights from this year’s Capitol Cross Challenge, Ballman and Crone clocked career-best 6K and 8K times, respectively, over their previous personal bests received at the UC Riverside Invitational. Ballman shaved off 32 seconds from her UC Riverside time, while Crone shaved off 30 seconds from his.
Meanwhile, UC Davis will send senior Anthony Sanchez, junior James De Mello, and sophomores Xolan Brown and Tom Robey from the men’s squad to Sunnyvale, Calif. to compete in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. There will be no Aggie runners from the women’s team competing at this invite.
At last year’s Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, UC Davis finished 10th overall on the men’s team, led by Ceja, who finished in eighth place with a career-best 8K time of 23:55.6, while the women finished 15th overall as a team, with Anderson leading the way with a previous personal record 6K time of 21:49.8. Anderson’s 21.49.8 career-best was cut down by 43 seconds after her performance at this year’s UC Riverside Invitational, clocking in that day’s 6K race at 21:06.6.
Brown, who finished in 58th place with a time of 26:50.0 in the men’s 8K open race at the 2016 Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, will be making his 2017 season debut this Saturday.
Both the UC Davis squads are off until Oct. 29, when the Aggies travel south to Riverside, Calif., to compete at the 2017 Big West Conference Championships.
