SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State San Bernardino scored three times in the second inning and righthander Casey Mutter pitched seven strong innings with nine strikeouts as the Coyotes defeated UC Davis in a non-conference game Friday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Earlier in the day, Cal Poly Pomona's Jarrod Allen led off the ninth inning with a game-winning home run as the Broncos escaped with a 4-3 win over the Aggies in UC Davis' season-opener.
The Aggies are 0-2 on the season and conclude their southern California trip Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. contest against Cal State San Bernardino.
Aggie starter Andy Kloos got into trouble in the second as he walked the bases loaded before getting Aaron Jimenez to strike out. The next batter, Jeff Weld, singled to drive in one run and Chris McAllen followed with a two-run double to left for the 3-0 lead.
The Coyotes picked up an insurance run in the eighth as pinch runner Eric Simmons scored on a wild pitch by Peter Soskin, who relieved Kloos in the sixth inning. Eric Foor pitched two innings of relief for the Coyotes, giving up one hit and striking out three for the save.
Matt Kamigawachi had three hits in four plate appearances to lead the Aggie offense. McAllen had two hits for the Coyotes, who were limited to just four hits on the night by Aggies hurlers Kloos and Soskin. Kloos was hurt by eight walks in 5.2 innings.
In the day's first game, Allen's leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth gave host Cal Poly Pomona the 4-3 victory over the Aggies.
Pomona jumped out to the early 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third. UC Davis cut the lead in half in the fifth following Irving's RBI single that scored Andy Reisinger.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pomona pushed the lead back to two on Kenny McCarthy's second home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the frame. The Aggies scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Matt Blankenheim earned a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to plate one run then Irving led of the seventh with a home run to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the ninth when Allen's second home run of the season gave the Broncos the victory.
Michael Potter started for UC Davis and went the first six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three. Vince DeCoito came on in the seventh to pitch the final two-plus innings, taking the loss while allowing two hits and striking out one.
