SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Mark Ayala Jr., Brian Schweiger and Jeff Weld each hit solo homers as Cal State San Bernardino defeated UC Davis, 6-1, Friday night in a non-conference collegiate baseball game before 125 chilled fans at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
UC Davis, a 9-4 winner over Cal Poly Pomona in a Friday afternooon game at the Broncos field, is now 1-1 while the Coyotes improve to 4-0 on the season.
CSUSB righthander Casey Mutter was impressive in his start, going six innings, allowing five hits whils striking out six to gain his first win of the season.
Greg Mathenia and Ray Cano came on to pitch three hitless innings for the Coyotes. UC Davis failed to get a hit over the final four innings.
UC Davis got its only run of the game in the second inning on a leadoff triple to right center by Ross Warner. After a walk to Matt Blankenheim, Warner came home on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Soderman. Freshman Lukas Kirby singled to keep the inning alive but Tyler LaTorre, another freshman, flied out to center to end the threat.
The Aggies had two on with two out in the third and again in the fifth but could not score against Mutter.
The Coyotes got two runs in the first inning. Weld reached base on an error, Chris DiBlasi walked and Matt Swaydan singled home Weld as DiBlasi went to third. DiBlasi scored on an error.
Ayala Jr.'s solo blast came in the second for a 3-1 Coyotes lead.
Schweiger homered in the fourth to make it 4-1 and Weld completed the scoring in the seventh with a blast over the left field fence.
UC Davis centerfielder Robby Tulk was 2-4 on the night, the only Aggie with two hits. Swaydan, Schweiger, Jake Puckett and Ayala Jr. each had two hits for the Coyotes.
