DAVIS, Calif. - David Butterworth's two-run home run in the top of the second inning gave the Aggies a lead they would not relinquish while starting pitcher Julio Marquez threw six solid innings as UC Davis defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 5-3, in a non-conference game in front of 200 Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field.
With the win the Aggies defeat the Broncos for the second time in as many days and improve to 2-1 on the season. Pomona falls to 1-5.
Pomona came out first and scored on a Jason Stuck RBI double in the bottom of the first. Butterworth erased that lead in the top of the second with his first home run of the season and the Aggies would add two more in the sixth on RBI singles from Andy Reisinger and Mark Wells .
Pomona cut the lead in half in the bottom of the ninth on a Matt Lopez RBI single and Kenny McCarthy sacrifice fly. But with a runner on first, reliever Ryan Coultas got Anthony Gonzales to fly out to left field, ending the threat.
Marquez started for UC Davis and went six innings, scattering eight hits but allowing just one run while striking out four. Four other Aggies came on in relief to protect the lead. At the plate Six different Aggies got hits, led by Butterworth's home run.
For Pomona, Michael Curcie started and went six innings, allowing four runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out seven. Taylor Wilding pitched the final three innings, scattering three hits while allowing one earned run. Chase Stroupe led the Broncos with three hits while Stuck and Kenny Galindo added two hits each.
UC Davis will open its home season this Friday when it hosts Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at the James M. and Ann Dobbins Baseball Stadium. Gametime is set for 2pm.
