Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senior right fielder Ryan Hooper and redshirt sophomore Logan Denholm crushed three-run and two-run homers, respectively, while senior infielder Brad Pluschkell was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the second game in a row, helping the Aggies clinch the series with a 15-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon.

UC Davis improves to 2-0 on the season while Bakersfield falls to an 0-2 mark overall.

Following suit with game one of the series, the Aggies posted another impressive performance on the mound at Hardt Field. UC Davis starting pitcher Chris Brown (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after allowing one run on eight hits over six innings of work. Freshman right-hander Brett Erwin made his collegiate debut as an Aggie in the top of the seventh and threw three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save, striking out two of the 10 batters he faced in the process.

Scoreless after the first inning, back-to-back walks in the top of the second began what would be a six-run inning for the Aggies. After a single to left field by sophomore Steve Ouellette brought one across for UC Davis, Hooper sent one packing down the left field line on the first pitch he saw to make it 4-0 in favor of UC Davis.

But the Aggies would have more to say before the end of the inning. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Denholm extended the Aggies’ lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer.

The Roadrunners would get on the board in the bottom of the third, reaching on an error and finding their way around the bases off two singles from third baseman Andrew Penner and catcher Ryan Koch.

The top of the fourth would see another multi-run bout from the UC Davis offense with redshirt junior Ryan Anderson and junior Caleb Van Blake each tallying a double for a combined four RBI.

Over the next three innings, RBI-singles from Hooper, junior Cameron Briggs, and Ouellette would boost the Aggies to a 14-1 lead.

Then in the top of the eighth, freshman Joey Myers tripled down the left field line in his official debut as an Aggie, and later crossed the plate with the final run for UC Davis on the afternoon.

Starting pitcher for the Roadrunners, Kyle King (0-1), suffers the loss for Bakersfield allowing six runs on five hits— the first of five pitchers that took the mound for Bakersfield.

Saturday afternoon’s game marked the first appearance in an Aggie uniform for freshman Joey Myers and freshman right-hander Brett Erwin.

UC Davis will go for the sweep of the Roadrunners tomorrow (Feb. 18) at 12 p.m. at Hardt Field.
