SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Dave McKae and Sean Rooney combined for a two-hit shutout while Daniel Descalso collected three of the Aggies' six hits as UC Davis opened its Southern California roadswing with a 3-0 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference baseball game Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win the Aggies improve to 4-2 on the season while San Diego falls to 7-6-1.
UC Davis scored first with single runs in the second and third. Lukas Kirby led off the second by reaching on an error by third baseman Keoni Ruth. Two outs later Kirby scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Daniel Baldini. The lead reached 2-0 in the third as Ryan Royster led off with a walk then came around to score on a Daniel Descalso single to short, one of three hits on the day for the freshman third baseman.
The Aggies extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh as Kevin James led off with a double to right. Jeremy McChesney then ran for James and came around to score one out later on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of David Huffman.
While the Aggies were chipping away at the Torero pitching staff, Aggie starter Dave McKae was masterful on the hill. The senior went 7.2 innings, allowing just two singles while striking out three on the afternoon. Only twice did a runner get past second base and he retired the side in order in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. With the win McKae improves to 2-1 on the season. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and runners on first and third, freshman Sean Rooney came on in relief and got Justin Snyder to ground out to second, ending the threat. Rooney retired San Diego in order in the ninth, striking out Shane Buschini to end the game and pick up his second save of the season.
The Aggies were helped by three San Diego errors on the afternoon, the first of which led to the game's first run.
Torero started Josh Butler went 7.0 innings, allowing all three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out three. Nicholas Cranmer came on in the eighth to strikeout the side, sandwiched around a single and stolen base by Descalso. Matt Falk pitched the ninth, allowing a runner to third before striking out Royster to get out of the inning.
In addition to Descalso, Baldini, James and Tyler LaTorre added hits for UC Davis. Ruth and Randy Curtis had the two lone hits for the Toreros.
The Aggies are next in action on Saturday when they meet Oregon State at 11 a.m. in San Diego.
