DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Dayne Quist pitched a complete game and gave up only two hits Friday as UC Davis defeated Utah 4-1 in the season opener for both teams at Dobbins Baseball Complex. The Aggies move to 1-0 while the Utes fall to 0-1 on the season. Quist (1-0) earned the win while the loss was attributed to Jordan Whatcott (0-1).
Quist struck out seven with only one walk, two hits and one earned run.
David Popkins led the Aggie offense after nearly hitting for the cycle. Popkins doubled in the second inning, then hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth before adding a single in the bottom of the sixth. He finished 3-for-3 on the day with two runs and three RBI.
Kyle Mihaylo was 2-for-4 with two runs and six putouts in right field.
For Utah, Michael Beltran and Nik Gumeson were both 1-for-3 while Nik Gumeson scored the Utes' only run.
Whatcott gave up seven hits and four runs and posted two strikeouts. He was relieved by Bryn Card who struck out three and gave up one hit in just over two innings.
The Utes got on the board first after Nik Gumeson singled to center field, then stole second base to open the second inning. Gumeson advanced to third after Devin Walker flied out to right field, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rick Cornu to put Utah up 1-0.
UC Davis would quickly tie the score, however. Mihaylo singled to third base, then moved to second base after a throwing error by third baseman Nick Kuroczko. Popkins' double to left field brought Mihaylo home to tie the score at one run apiece.
Popkins and Mihaylo teamed up to score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after Popkins' homered over the right field wall to give UC Davis the 3-1 advantage. Paul Politi nearly scored another run for the Aggies when he attempted to cross home plate after a wild pitch from Whatcott, but Utah catcher Jo Jo Sharrar recovered and tossed the ball to Whatcott for the out.
In the sixth inning, Popkins gave the Aggies the lead for good after scoring off a Politi double to right field.
Quist gave up a single to Gumeson in the second inning, but stayed perfect for the next five innings and retired 18 straight Utah batters before Beltran doubled to right center field in the top of the ninth.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday at Dobbins Baseball Complex. The Aggies and the Utes will play a doubleheader due to potential inclemente weather Sunday. The first game will begin at 11:00 a.m. while the second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
