DAVIS, Calif. - Alex Lipson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and the UC Davis baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to take a 6-2 win over Utah on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
UC Davis improves to 2-1 overall while Utah drops to 1-2.
Tom Briner earned his first win of the year after allowing just one run in seven complete innings of work while striking out four batters.
In the first inning, Tyson Gonzalez singled through the gap into right field, but Briner settled in and retired the next 11 straight Utah batters, until Trey Nielsen singled to lead off the fifth inning. With a runner on third, however, Briner forced Tyler Relf into a ground out to end the inning.
Briner gave up a run in the sixth inning after Parker Morin singled into right field to score James Brooks, but retired the side in the seventh, closing out his day by striking out Biss Larsen.
Freshman Spencer Koopmans entered the game in the eighth and forced the first batter he faced, pinch hitter Gavin Green, to ground out to first base, but walked two Utes and allowed a single up the middle to load the bases with just one out. He struck out the final two batters he faced, however, and held Utah to just one run.
Offensively, UC Davis struck first when the Aggies put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brett Morgan reached first base after being hit by a pitch, then stole both second and third before Adam Young laid down a bunt down the first base line to bring Morgan home. Lipson followed that with his first RBI of the day when his single into center field allowed Scott Kalush to score to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The Aggie bats came to life again in the seventh inning when David Popkins and Paul Politi connected for back-to-back base hits. With two outs and a runner on third, Morgan's bunt down the third base line allowed Popkins to score to put UC Davis up 3-1. CJ Blom stepped in to pinch hit for Adam Young and, with the bases loaded and two out, Blom drew a walk to bring around designated hitter Nick Lynch.
Lipson's second hit of the day was another gem as his line drive up the middle allowed Kalush and Morgan to score for a 6-1 UC Davis lead.
The Utes tacked on another run in the eighth on Morin's RBI single into right field, but Harry Stanwyck closed out the win for UC Davis after entering the game in the ninth. He forced pinch hitter Jo Jo Sharrar into a double play, then Green's ground out to shortstop sealed the 6-2 Aggie victory.
Five other Aggie players recorded a hit while Morgan and Kalush each scored two runs apiece.
For Utah, Morin went 2-for-4 with two RBI while James Brooks scored two runs.
UC Davis closes out the four-game series with Utah on Monday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
