SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Scott Cousins' RBI single in the eighth inning scored Travis McGaughy to break a 2-2 tie and push across the eventual game-winning run as the University of San Francisco scored the final three runs in a 3-2 victory over UC Davis in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
With the loss the Aggies drop their third straight and fall to 4-5 on the season. USF improves to 5-3.
In the eighth Mitchell Bialosky connected for a one-out double up the middle and was replaced on the base paths by McGaughy. After advancing to third on a ground out, McGaughy came across on Cousins' single through the right side. It was the second time this season Cousins has done in UC Davis, throwing seven innings of two-hit ball in the Dons' 4-0 win over the Aggies earlier this month.
The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after single runs in the first and second. Brandon Oliver opened the game with a bunt single, stole single and came in to score of an RBI ground out from Daniel Descalso. In the second, Sean Rooney drilled a one-out double down the line in right, then scored when the next batter, David Huffman, singled up the middle. USF cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame when Daniel Morales hit a leadoff double to left and scored on a Lucas DeLong double down the right field line.
In the third the Dons tied it up as Jacob Abramson singled through the right side, scoring Jonnie Knoble, who led off the inning with a single to right field.
Aggie starter Paul Gonzales went four innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out one. After scoreless innings from Nik Aurora and Eddie Gamboa, Peter Soskin came on in the seventh and allowed one run on two hits as he suffered his first loss of the year.
Oliver, Rooney and David Treat each had two hits on the day to lead UC Davis at the plate. The Dons were paced by Morales, who laced a pair of doubles, as part of USF's eight-hit afternoon.
After surrendering singles runs in the first two innings, three Dons pitchers combined to hold the Aggies scoreless the rest of the way. Patrick McGuigan threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit as he picked up his first win of the season.
The Aggies are next in action on Friday when they host the University of Portland in the first of a three-game series. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
