DAVIS, Calif. -
Trevor Thornton went seven strong innings and Ross Warner banged out a pair of hits as UC Davis defeated Chico State, 5-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game Sunday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium.
With the victory the Aggies take three of four from the Wildcats in the series and improve to 10-5 on the season, 8-4 in CCAA play. Chico falls to 10-10, 3-9 in conference action.
As they did in their previous two victories, the Aggies jumped out on top in the first inning. Robby Tulk led off the game with a walk, was singled to second by Ryan Coultas and scored two batters later on Warner's sacrifice fly to center.
The Aggies would add single runs in the second a third before Chico would get on the scoreboard on an RBI double off the bat of Brett Polan, cutting the lead to 3-1. In the top of the fifth UC Davis got the run back as Matt Kamigawachi led off the frame with a triple to center field. He scored on the next batter when Warner singled him home. Dustin Soderman capped the Aggie scoring with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, his first of the season.
Chico State added single runs in the eighth and ninth to close out the scoring.
Thornton got the start for UC Davis and went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs while scattering six hits and striking out three. Thornton picked up his third win of the season against one defeat. Travis Bearden went the final 1.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit.
At the plate, Warner went 2-for-4 to lead UC Davis , including two RBIs, while six other Aggies added hits.
UC Davis will host Saint Mary's in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. Gametime is set for 2:30pm.
