HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Daniel Descalso drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single in the seventh, while Eddie Gamboa threw 3.1 innings of hitless relief to pick up his first win as UC Davis defeated Hawai'i, 3-2, on the second day of play at the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Tuesday evening at Les Murakami Stadium.
With the win the Aggies improve to 7-7 on the season and move to 1-1 at the tournament. The host Rainbows fall to 7-7 and 0-2 this week.
With the score tied at 2-2 entering the seventh, Brandon Oliver lined a one-out single to right for UC Davis. After a sacrifice bunt by Matt Dempsey moved Oliver to second, Descalso singled through the right side to drive home Oliver with the eventual game-winner. From there it was left to Gamboa, who came on in relief of Jeremy McChesney with two outs in the sixth. Gamboa went the rest of the way, walking one and striking out one, while not allowing a Rainbow batter past first base as his record moved to 1-0 on the season.
The Aggies opened the scoring with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Lukas Kirby singled home Dempsey for the Aggies' first run then increased their lead to 2-0 when David Huffman singled up the middle, scoring Sean Rooney, who reached base with his second of three hits on the afternoon.
Hawai`i answered in the sixth as Daniel Magana started it off with a single to left. After moving over on a groundout, Myles Inouye singled him in to cut the lead to 2-1. Rocky Russo then hit a double to right center, driving in Inouye, tying the game at 2-2.
McChesney went the first 5.2 innings for the Aggies, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Offensively, Rooney led an 11-hit Aggie attack with two singles and a double, while Oliver, Dempsey and Kirby each added two hits.
Hawai'i used four pitches on the evening as Myles Ioane went the first four innings before giving way to Dean Turner, who went 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits in seeing his record go to 0-1 on the season. Hawai'i managed just five hits in the game, with Russo leading the way with two.
The Aggies continue play at the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament on Thursday when they face Wichita State. Gametime is set for 4:30 p.m., PST.
