DAVIS, Calif. -
Cory Wiltshire drove home the winning run in the ninth inning and had two home runs and five RBIs to lead Portland to an 11-10 victory over UC Davis on the opening day of the fifth annual River City Classic at Dobbins Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies have now dropped two straight one-run contest and fall to 6-5 on the season. The Pilots defeated Utah Valley State in their first game to go 2-0 on the day and improve their overall record to 8-4.
Junior Jake Jefferies continues his hot hitting for UC Davis as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBIs. Fellow junior Grant Hirneise and senior Ryan Royster also drove in two runs apiece and scored a combined three runs.
Wiltshire finished the day with four hits in six at bats to go with two runs scored, five RBIs and two home runs. Eric Brown was the only other Pilot with multiple runs batted in as he belted a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning.
UC Davis lead 10-8 heading into the ninth inning but gave up three runs to suffer the loss. Danny Meier opened the inning with a solo home run to right field to cut the lead to one, 10-9. Following a dropped fly ball by the Aggie left fielder, the Pilots got a single to center field and advanced on a throwing error to get both runners into scoring position. Whiltshire drove a single to left field to bring home both runners before being thrown out at second to end the inning.
Scott Burris pitched the final three innings to get his first career win for Portland. Despite not giving up an earned run, Justin Fitzgerald got the loss for UC Davis. Eddie Gamboa started the game for the Aggies and struck out eight batters in six innings to earn the no decision.
The two teams exploded in the sixth inning and combined to score 13 runs. Portland scored five in the top half of the inning to briefly claim the lead at 6-2. The Aggies would score eight in the bottom half to reclaim the lead at 10-6. Hirneise singled home the first two runs and Jefferies hit a three-run homer to right field to highlight the inning.
Portland held the lead after the first inning behind a solo home run from Whiltshire. Royster hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give UC Davis it's first lead of the game. Whiltshire hit his second home run, a two-run shot, in the eighth to cut the lead to two.
The Aggies continue their homestand tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game against San Jose State. It will be the Aggies' second game of the River City Classic and the eighth of a nine-game homestand.
