DAVIS, Calif. - David Butterworth's three-run home run capped a five-run sixth inning to lift UC Davis to a 9-1 victory over the Shanghai Professional Baseball Team in an exhibition game Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon while three Aggie pitchers combined to allow just six hits and one unearned run.
Shanghai opened the scoring with a run in the first. After reaching on a error, Lin Chen scored on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Qu Wei Feng. The Aggies tied it in the bottom of the fourth when David Treat found a hole between first and second to drive home Kevin James, who led off the inning with a double to right.
The Aggies took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. RBI doubles from Ryan Royster and Kevin James produced the first two runs while Sean Rooney's sacrifice fly scored James with the third run of the frame. UC Davis added five more runs in the sixth, the big blast being Butterworth's three-run home run to left.
Butterworth finished the day two hits and three RBIs, while Royster, James, Treat and Kyle Irving also had two hits each. Michael Philips went the first five innings for the Aggies, allowing one run on three hits to get the victory.
He Chang Zheng led Shanghai with a pair of singles.
UC Davis begins a three-game series with Utah Valley State on Friday at Dobbins Stadium. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
