SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore lefty Dayne Quist threw his third complete game win in four starts to lead UC Davis to a 5-3 win over Southern Illinois at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament Friday at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
UC Davis improves to 8-6 on the year while Southern Illinois drops to 5-8.
Quist tied a season-high with seven strikeouts while giving up five hits and three earned runs and improves to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
In 2008, Eddie Gamboa threw three complete games over the course of the entire season while Dave McKae recorded four complete games in the 2005 season.
Southern Illinois' Lee Weld was given the loss to drop to 0-3 after giving up eight hits and five runs, four of which were earned, in 6.0 innings.
David Popkins led the UC Davis offense as he hit 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and recorded a stolen base while Eric Johnson and Kyle Mihaylo each hit 2-for-4.
The Salukis struck first, picking up two runs in the first inning after Chris Murphy singled through the left side, then advanced to third. Murphy would score off a wild pitch, then Blake Pinnon scored off a single by Chris Serritella to the shortstop.
UC Davis rallied in the second inning with two runs of their own as Scott Lyman got on board with a single to left field, then advanced to second on a passed ball. He would score off a single by Popkins who then crossed home plate to tie the score at two runs apiece.
The Aggies went ahead for good in the fourth inning. Popkins reached first base by way of a single to right field, then came home on a double by Johnson down the right field line. Mihaylo then hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to give UC Davis the lead for good. It was Mihaylo's second home run in as many games.
Southern Illinois was only able to get one additional run in the sixth inning when Murphy scored off a double by Pinnon to left center field.
The game was moved back to a 1 p.m. start time to accomodate impending rain in the area.
