DAVIS, Calif. - Nick Lynch hit a two-out walkoff single to right field and the UC Davis baseball team scored both of its runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Stanford, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies (10-12) scored two runs on five hits with one error and the Cardinal (11-8) tallied one run on four hits with one error. UC Davis has won two straight games this week after defeating San Jose State, 9-2, on the road Monday night.

"Coming off finals week and getting these two wins is big for us," said head coach Matt Vaughn. "We had a tough series at Seattle U before finals but our guys were ready for these games. It was especially fun seeing three freshmen go out there today and pitch really well. It bodes well for us going forward."

UC Davis redshirt freshman reliever Max Cordy (4-2) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning while Stanford reliever Garrett Hughes (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and a wild pitch in the ninth.

Stanford struck first, with its only run of the game in the first inning. It could have been worse than that for the Aggies, however. The Cardinal led off the game with back-to-back doubles and scored on a sacrifice fly. But on the sac fly, UC Davis center fielder Kevin Barker rifled the ball to third and caught Stanford catcher Wayne Taylor trying to advance from second. The inning then ended with minimal damage after a fly out to right.

The game settled into a pitcher's duel after the top of the first inning, as the Aggies and Cardinal combined for just two hits over the next six innings.

UC Davis starting pitcher Evan Wolf allowed one run on three hits in three innings to start the game followed by freshmen relievers Spencer Henderson and Zach Williams, who combined to toss five innings of no-hit ball with just one walk. Cordy gave up one hit in the ninth but kept the Cardinal off the board until the offense finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth.

John Williams crushed a full-count triple to right to start the ninth for the Aggies but Hughes retired the next two batters he faced. With the game on the line and Paul Politi in the box, Hughes uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Williams to score the tying run from third. Politi followed with a single up the middle and and stole second. After Steven Patterson walked, Stanford pulled Hughes and brought on reliever Sam Lindquist. Lynch turned on Lindquist's first pitch and drove it over the leaping second baseman to bring home Politi for the walkoff win.

The Aggies had just two hits in the game before posting three in the ninth inning. UC Davis' four pitchers combined to allow just four hits and issued only one walk while throwing 104 total pitches. Stanford's pitching staff was equally effective before the ninth. Reliever James Logan allowed just one hit over 4.2 innings before being removed for Hughes in the eighth.

Up next for the Aggies is the beginning of Big West Conference play. UC Davis will visit No. 21 ranked Cal Poly for a three-game series starting Thursday night. The Aggies host No. 5 ranked Cal State Fullerton next weekend.

"It doesn't get any easier for us now," Vaughn said. " We have what looks like the two best teams in the Big West in back-to-back weekends. We need to keep playing hard and keep getting better."
